Absolutely bossing it. I know it's a friendly but Trippier never played as well as he has today and vs City last season. If he is happy to play there then I honestly don't think we need a RB if Toby stays

I said this a while ago yet I’m going to say it again. Foyth will develop into one of the best defenders in the world by the time he’s 26. Everytime I’ve seen him I’ve loved watching him, he’s such a brilliant player technically.

He makes mistakes and makes me feel on edge at times but he’s a brave young defender with his passes, tackles and dribbles - he’s bound to make errors. He isn’t a young defender that looks fearful and out of place, which is why I believe he’s made more mistakes. He doesn’t hide, he wants the ball and wants to make a difference. He will learn to judge tackles worth making and when it’s best to back off, he’s inexperienced. Playing for Argentina this summer was brilliant for us and I’m sure he will rise to the challenge this season.

I believe he has the talent too, looks ridiculously comfortable with the ball. Reign in those clumsy lunges, and he'll be a winner.

I’m still in two minds about him at right back. If he’s going to play there then he needs games there. But if KWP does well in the first two games of the season then you have to say the shirt is kyle’s to lose. It’s only fair.

I think he needs to tighten up as a player got done a few times Trippier style.. really needs to be coached in tackling and decision making. I would like to see him concentrate on defending first because I really think he has the talent..

Let's not get carried away. He's clearly got ability, that's never been in question, but I'm still not sure if he's ultimately going to be a right back. He was fine today but he was still beaten on a couple of occasions and he didn't offer much going forward.

Installing Foyth as our permanent right back may yet be a Poch masterstroke, but not signing a Trippier replacement could also still be a huge mistake. The jury is still very much out.

We have 2 right backs (3 if you include Foyth), we don't need a 4th. If our friendlies have been any indication, KWP/Foyth/Aurier should be more than enough.

Not to be a Debbie downer but KWP hasn't exactly looked ready in the pre season games I've watched....

Asia tour was a mixed bag. He looked a bit better today 2nd half. Unless Aurier gets fit and up to speed with the team in the next 3 weeks, KWP will start the first 2 games against Villa and City as Foyth serves the rest of his ban. If he proves himself competent in those 2 matches, it wouldnt surprise me if Foyth is again primarily used at CB and we stick with Aurier and KWP. IMO, KWP is a bit slight and easily pushed off the ball. Going to have to work on his upper body strength to make it.

Fair point I only saw the Juve game and the Madrid game....I expected a bit more from KWP to be honest was just a bit underwhelmed.

Lol, I really didn’t rate Trips but this is nonsense. He had more than his fair share of great performances.
Foyths performance today was a regular Ben Davies type performance, with a lot less adventure.

If you’re expecting Foyth to be adventurous at RB, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. He’s not going to be that high up the pitch too often. Only if we’re really pinning them back.

I actually think it could work, given time.

I've said it in the match thread but I can see it working like Man City use their full backs, with little adventure. They have a really fluid front 5 with real width added by Sane, Bernardo, Sterling, which opens up space in the middle. Its only 45 minutes in a pre season game but I felt the front players today were spread and left us not relying on full backs for invention.

I could even see an attacking full back like Rose or Sessegnon playing on the left, with Eriksen/Alli playing narrow left. Then on the right you have Foyth essentially forming a back three with two cbs and Son/Moura sticking to the touchline.

Essentially:

Foyth CB CB Rose/Sessegnon
CM CM
Son/Moura Eriksen Alli
Kane

Which when attacking becomes:

Foyth CB CB
CM CM
Son/Moura Eriksen Alli Rose/Sessegon
Kane

Could be total bollocks, but could work. Just a theory.

I'm more than happy to have him as first choice RB. It's not somthing poch as suddenly come up with, it's been going on since last season.

Interesting to see how he develops there because he will become a great player.

Think these days, most of the defenders can play anywhere in the back 4.

Toby was RB and Jan LB with the national side when we signed them.

Even Kyle Walker was signed as a center back (Naughton was RB).

So nothing in our recent history says he can't do a job for us.

What is gonna count is how he does further up the field. so far he is decent... but will only judge after a few games.

He has a tendency to push the ball too far when dribbling and then lunge in to try to win it back. He got a red card for it v Bournemouth and very nearly did it again v RM. Needs to cut that out immediately IMO.

What was wrong with him yesterday? Did you see the pass he played over the defence onto Dele's chest? Unreal. He's scrappy in the tackle as well.

I've done it myself, because subconsciously I want shiny new players, but KWP is good enough probably. He's just built like a young girl, which can be worked on.

Those saying Foyth isn't any good going forward are forgetting he started out as an attacking midfielder. His passing is very good and he has reasonable delivery. His passing technique and decision making will make up for the lack pace in the same way it does for Vertonghen.
Playing at RB will also help him for when he plays right side of a back three.
