Not that he doesn't deserve it, but surely having a player of the week requires there to be games, oh I don't know, EVERY WEEK PERHAPS???

BTW, I love SuperJan! I'm going to go a bit gooey now, but the thing I like is his crow's feet. Shows that he smiles a lot, which means he has a warm nature or is an evil genius. Either way: winner!

Jan edges for one reason.... He brings more calm to the defence. Last season he got Sanchez playing very well, this season Toby hasn't had that effect on Sanchez. Jan is our leader at the back
That might be to do with the fact, when Sanchez plays he's always on the right of the centre pairing. With Jan, being on the left is his natural position, but Toby has to change his natural position and fits in on the left and at times it shows.

The most gifted all-around player I've ever seen at Spurs, I think. Genuinely think he could do a job in any position if needed.

Very well deserved - was one of the best performances and on par with Dembeles against Juventus away

Hell of a week for Verts - I bet his wife/gf really did sort him out this week

Lucky bitch

Absolutely superb again in Dortmund this week.

and to think that the great young British manager Timmy Sherwood once said this about him!
“Vertonghen is so poor. Can’t move his feet. He looks elegant with the ball but he just can’t defend”

Has been our best defender for last 2 seasons if not more. So why is he going into the last year of his contract. He is 31 but he must be worth at least a two year extension.

If he has the energy to play at LWB for 90 minutes in the CL against a young team at the age of 31, he should be good to play at the highest level until he's 33-34 easily at CB.

Didn't we activate an option in his contract reasonably recently?

Yeh we did. Runs out next summer...I also have absolute zero itk on this but I'd guess that we would sign him up further but he'd want to finish his career back at Ajax and that's the reason a new one hasn't been signed

Vertonghen finishes next season as a 33 year old. Magnificent though he still is, at that age a players form is liable to fall off a cliff without recovering again. Given that, I imagine at most we’ll want to offer him a year at a time, while he’ll most likely want a longer, bumper deal to finish off his career. His relative susceptibility to injury only compounds this, at some point he’ll roll his ankle and won’t come back the same player.

It’s sad, particular as his age and the timing of his contract expiry means he’ll probsbly never get the same treatment that Kane, Dele, Son have recently received regarding contracts, but I understand the approach because with every season that starts, he’s less likely to finish it in the first team.

Not all players fall off a cliff at 33. I can easily envisage Verts playing here until 35. He’s never had many serious injuries, he’s never been blessed with outstanding pace, and he clearly looks after himself very well. Most importantly his appreciation of the art of defending is just getting better and better.

I have a cunning plan. We allow Jan to walk off into the sunset to retire at Ajax as a Spurs legend, but we get Matthijs de Ligt in return. Win win! Would still miss Jan though...

Bingo, there's really just no need to hand him a 3 year deal. Just keep doing the one year extensions. People get so caught up in the moment around here. He's already missed 3 months this season to injury. It would be incredibly foolish to offer him a 3 year contract extension.
