One of the best individual performances I’ve seen from a player in a Spurs shirt for a long time.

Poch needs to tell Jan to stop being a bitch and play left back. What a fcuking left back.

I think this is a misunderstanding - Jan did not want to be a primary LB 5 years ago, when he was still trying to cement his role in the Belgian team (even though he played LB for them) - and I think there was a lot of general squad unhappiness at the end of the AVB/Sherwood era.

I think Jan would play out wide whenever Poch asked.

Having said that - Poch will not make this a habit, imo. Physically, the position is very demanding, at a time where Jan should be conserving his energy to prolong his career.

Seems crazy not to play him as LB after that performance. Crossing ability is next level.

I think it just shows how average Davies is too. Not in a million years does Davies have a performance like what Verts showed tonight in him.

I like Davies, he’s dependable but it shows the difference in levels. Verts is just a class player. Has been one of my favourite players since he arrived at Spurs.

Fucking immense tonight. His energy was incredible, and his delivery was outstanding. Hugo skippered the side tonight, but it was led by Jan. Brilliant display.

I think tonight was maybe the best performance I’ve ever seen from a Spurs fb. Maybe Bale in one of his rampaging lb displays was on a par. Sensational.

I remember Jan putting in a great performance at LB against Everton awhile back. I don't remember what season it was exactly though

Hard to believe that most people outside of Spurs believe that Toby is our best defender. Jan is and has been our best defender for many years now. A real class act.
I mean, Jan is amazing but I slightly prefer Toby. I don't think thats a ridiculous statement.

Whether he wants to play LB or not, surely he must have enjoyed that.

Jan edges for one reason.... He brings more calm to the defence. Last season he got Sanchez playing very well, this season Toby hasn't had that effect on Sanchez. Jan is our leader at the back

When I grow up I want to be like Jan Vertonghen… in all honestly though, what an absolute outrageous performance, the energy he showed to bomb up and down constantly and not look one bit tired, he figured Sancho out and then completely nullified him whilst destroying them with his skill, determination and crosses.

What a man.

We really need to give Toby and Jan big contracts

Not sure it's going to happen with Toby though :(
Love to see them sign new contracts but I guess we are a little concerned at their ages and their recent injury records. If it were me I would give them new big contracts and accept the risk knowing we have such good back ups ready.

He spoke about it before the game and proved it throughout, Jan's physical fitness is fucking ludicrous.

His primary objective was to keep Sancho quiet, and he did that with ease and managed to bag a goal and assist too.

There wasn't a single bead of sweat or any heavy breathing from him at full time. The **** walked off the pitch as if he had a cigar in his mouth and a smoking jacket on.

Even the ref loved our Jan. He gave him a little slap on the bum during a 1st half corner, no idea why !!
