I want Berge to replace Wanyama, not Dembele.
Which is the role Winks is currently doing, so a bit unfair to complain about his attacking stats. Before Winks was playing as a DM, he scored 1 and assisted 2 in 1247 mins (across 2 seasons), if he continued that rate, over a season that would amount to about 3 goals and 5 assists.

Who do you want us to sign to partner Berge (should we sign him) in CM?

Dembele also dominated on the defensive end and was impossible to get the ball from making us very press resistant.
But Dembele didn't become that player until he was 28. Even in Poch's first season Dembele was dropped in favor of Bentaleb and Mason as he kept holding onto the ball too long, then passing backwards and breaking our attacks down.

At Winks age, Demebele had just signed for Fulham and was playing AM/Winger and scored 3, assisted 3, which ended up being his equal best goals or assists in a single season in the PL.

When has a Poch cm2 been expected to chip in with goals (and, arguably assists too)? Like it or not, they're tasked with setting a platform and holding and controlling the centre of the park. Any goals they pop up with is a bonus.

And what did win with that approach ? My point is the majority of successful teams have a CM that at the very least regularly assists.

I’m not sure the original plan with Winks was as the deep laying midfielder. Early on he was played alongside Dier and wanyama and most saw him as the dembele replacement as the more advanced in a 2. But with Dier and wanyama absences he has made that role his own and sissoko filled the dembele role. I do feel a winks/Dier partnership would be too stodgy and negative. But in theory having winks and Dier as our 2 CDM gives a nice variety. The obvious thing is to replace wanyama with a more attacking CM.

Put a proper destroyer next to winks and you’ll see how good he is at breaking lines when he has the security of someone next to him. Look at his forays and dribbles in brief glimpses during games. The boy has excellent ability with the ball at his feet, he’s just playing within himself and the tactical limits set upon his role.

Second half against barca at home when dier replaced wanyama...

Dembele was usually partnered with someone more defensive minded. His job was to get the ball through the middle of the park, something Winks is becoming very good at already. But we both agree that assists isnt the best measure of how good a deeper lying CM is.

Is that for teams that play with a CM 2 or just a CM 3 though? If CM 2, do you have any examples?

If Winks or Dier are unavailable for the Dortmund game, I’m not opposed to using Foyth as our DM. At least, at that position, if he makes mistakes, the CBs behind him can provide cover.

Wanyama looks finished and I really don’t want to see Rose in midfield.

I'm undecided on this, so I thought I'd ask some of you for your opinions. Do you lot think Winks will end up as a traditional box to box #8, or more of a #6?

I love the way he recycles possession at the base of our midfield, and feel he speeds up the tempo of our attacking play from the base of midfield, but I have questions about his defensive ability in this role.

On the other hand, his ball carrying and press resistance is great, especially for his size, but I don't know if he has the final ball or the ability to dominate a game like Dembele (or other great #8s) could.

I think he can improve in both positions, but he's going to have to "specialize" soon if he's to realize his potential.

He will be like Carrick
