I remember a time when some fans were getting on his back saying he's not good enough or something like that.

It was only 2 months ago as well :cautious:

I don’t want to be THAT GUY, who slates armchair fans...but hey. You have to watch him live to appreciate him. He is constantly moving and being that one available player.

People in the match day thread are TV fans. They are welcome to their opinion but they cannot make a fair or proper judgement.

Question without notice. How many midfielders in the world 23 or under are better than him, or at least on the same level? I can't imagine there would be too many.

he's a really good young midfielder but he needs to add something to be "great". I have faith in him tho
Experience. Which he gains every week. That midfield pivot role is his now, and he always shows up in the big games.

By the time he's 25/26 he will be extraordinary. Spurs, and England, finally have that cultured midfielder that we've been missing since Scholes retired.

Tottenham fans: “We are losing Mousa Dembele in central midfield. How do we ever replace him?”
Harry Winks: “Hold my beer....”

Without knowing what you mean by ‘something’, I’m not sure I agree.
Do you mean adding, say, goals or assists?

Graeme Souness constantly bangs on about modern midfielders only doing certain jobs; either holding, attacking, creative. The inference being in his day, midfielders (ie, him) did a bit of everything.

To some extent he’s right, midfielders do tend to be specialist these days but there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s modern football.
If Winks can develop into a deep-lying, ball retention expert with an eye for an incisive forward pass, then brilliant. Pirlo did ok out of that.

yeah, goals, assists or something else other than just the possession job he does right now. Its a bit like Dembele - previous managers have said he needed to add some goals to his game. Ands Id argue Dembele was more resolute in his defending due to superior strength. Ive been a Winks fan since he broke into the first team and after a season wasted last year due to injury he's progressed again this year. Id like to see him continue to develop.

Love when Winks is asked about his football idols and memories growing up he talks about things like the 2008 League cup win as a big highlight!

Proper spurs fan that would be up in the stands if we wasn’t on the pitch combined with a quality player - rare in the modern game and we have several of them

Exactly one of the reasons I love him.

He gives a serious shit about us as a club. (y)

Still want to see him doing more on the ball, more progressive.

It is promising as he has stepped it up the last month, he certainly was not playing this well earlier than that, however people may like to spin it.

I have to agree with what Souness said about him on Sunday though, he needs to do a bit more than just cycle possession and keep it simple if he wants to be top tier.

It's not enough for a CM nowadays to just play 5 yard passes sideways. He attempted some through balls yesterday, none came off. If he wants be the player we need in CM, he will have to improve that part of his game.

That said, other areas of his game are showing marked improvement in recent weeks.

I disagree Nowadays is absolutely the time where midfielders play short passes and dictate the game without over extending themselves, In Sounness day they did everything because tactically it was simplistic but Barca revolutionised the game with Busquets and Xavi in those deep roles, constantly recycling possession, shifting the shape of the opposing team so that the more attacking forwards could take advantage of the space. They're so many teams who are set up with players like that.

Hate this way of thinking. I live in Northern Ireland, and have only been to 3 matches this season. I think Winks is brilliant - watching on TV isn't an excuse for having a poor opinion, nor is it reason to insult someone or make out their opinion is less valid.

While I feel you, watching ''wide lens'' whether live with your eyeballs or with a non edited camera view certainly gives you a different impression of a performance.

People need to stop comparing Winks to Xavi and Busquets. Winks isn't fit to lace their boots.
Barcelona was Tikki Takka and it's a million miles away from Winks passing sideways to CBs all match and rarely playing a forward pass which when he does pretty much always goes to an opposition player.

He is improving, Winks that is, he has played very well in recent weeks, but please stop comparing Winks to the likes of Xavi, it's embarrassing. He's nowhere near. It may be the way we want to play, and it may be the role Winks is assigned to, but he doesn't play it close to that level.

The thing is, I get criticism for not OTT fawning over him but I just call it as I see it. There are many fans on here guilty of going too far the other way.

If Winks can develop his play so that he can see and execute decisive forward passes from deep, he will then be THAT player. If he doesn't, I think there is a ceiling to his potential.
