Still not entirely convinced he is any better than Tom Carroll. (who I really liked)
Don't mind Winks, but he's yet to really make a big impression.

This HAS to be a joke, right? Can you see Tom Carroll dominate a midfield that contained Luka Modric and Toni Kroos?

Subjectivity is great isn't it...

John Hartson on BT commentary put Winks up there with Son for motm (behind Dele) but others think he was poor/average.

Game by game. Perhaps. But his overall career to date has been impressive. Especially considering his injury lay off. I get that academy players tend to be romanticised more, but to.say he hasn't.made.a.big impression?

I also thought Winks had a good game today. He was carrying the ball a lot more than usual I thought and looked quite confident. Haven't read the negatives but I will go into the ratings thread now.

If we ignore how they were developed and handled and judge purely on what they did for the first team Winks has been loads more effective. Winks knits the play together very well. When you say you're not convinced he's any better it depends what you mean. If you're expecting him, to pull of great passes and show quality vision to create chances you won't get it. You're obviously comparing what you saw of them at u23 level, and Carroll showed a bit of it in the EL for us. However, Winks all round play is a lot better, and he has the ability and potential to nail himself on as a start for the forseeable future, unless we buy someone World Class

I think he is capable of doing this. We saw it prior to his injury lay off more. I don't think the current cm pairing options do him too many favours personally. But he has adapted, always the sign of.a.good midfielder.

My favourite post ever

Whilst we are at it I found Anthony Gardener no better than Ledley King and managerially i would put Ozzie Ardiles on the same level as Mauricio Pochettino

If Winks remains fit and keeps acting/playing the Poch way he will be started for club and country by seasons end and for years to come....he has incredible potential.

I think it might be that I really believed from what I saw of Carroll, when he played in the first team that it was only a matter of time before he bulked up and he would be an established 1st player.
I believe he had a good understanding with Kane. And whilst he played a lot of sideways passes, when he played forward it was often what Opta might call a "key pass"
So I think maybe I'm very cautious to belive the hype around Winks. I think IF Spurs were to buy a CM, out of Winks, Sissoko and Dier (the 3 guys currently occupying the CM spots) I believe it would be Winks who would lose the most minutes.

Just my opinion, and would be happy to be proved wrong. But I don't expect Winks to be starting for Spurs in 3 years time. (assuming Spurs maintain a similar level)

He’s doing really well building himself back up since the injury lay-off. He just needs to cut out the one or two bits of loose play he’s currently guilty off most games - either a loose pass or being caught in possesion.

Just tighten up a little bit and he’ll be golden.

I don't know, it's not something I've really ever seen him do. I'm not talking about sliding a ball on down the inside of a full back a cross field ball, I'm talking the passes I've seen Toby pick out Alli with, or reverse through balls that will scythe through defences and catch people off guard. There's no shame in not being able to do it and I'm just wary about placing expectations on him that he can't really reach. As I've said if I never saw him do it in the academy I don't know why he'd start doing it now. His passing his very good though I just think he is more safe. What I would like him to do and it will come with confidence more is try to pass forward that little bit more. Those balls where you think I'm not sure it will reach, so you decide to go sideways, I'd like him to attempt. Or little passes around the corner around the box. He is doing that a lot more though. As you say he is adapting well, but that is the thing with him he won't quite specialise in anything I don't think. He'll be a good allrounder and he will be very good at doing it.

I do think you're underrating him though I can see why. The only reason I might agree with you here is I think it's clear Poch prefers a big stocky powerful CM to smaller ones. But he should be starting ahead of those 2 imo.

I was also a fan of Tom although with winks he has more bite and also has a little Dembele about him, as regards to his driving runs.

Winks still lacks a little composure in the final third, he is also a little bit inconsistent. However he has an incredibly high ceiling and that type of midfield player could be our (and England's) future star.

Where he goes from here is up to him. I see him as a more dynamic and technical yet less powerful Dembele.

He reminds me of mark noble ( at his best) a tidy player who when on song is key. But never going to be world class

I said earlier to a pal he plays like a better version of Mark Noble.

He doesn’t have to be world class to be part of a top side though. Consistency and having a class partner or two in there with him could make all the difference.

I agree , I was just hoping for another Harry Kane type product who is just unreal.

Makes you wonder how Barcelona produce so many world class talents so effortlessly season after season

They produce players with a certain style ingrained within them. Not sure they produce too many world class players on a regular basis.
The many who fail to make the grade there seem to struggle even more so when they leave because hardly anyone has that style of football running through the entire club.

It’s better to produce an array of different players imo. Barca just had a freak few years which happens from time to time. All their top younger players are buys.

Going forward it would be nice to add a homegrown player to the strongest matchday squad, every 2/3 years or so. I think we could see a somewhat unique situation at Spurs in the next few years. Could well have 4/5 proper homegrown players starting for us.

For instance....compare Winks to a similar player that Barca are bringing through in Puig (who we've been linked to before he signed a new deal)....Puig will develop into a world class talent based on what he's been put through in their academy that has that proven tracked record of producing talent. Part of it is down to the player to take opportunities and produce but the main part is being coached the right way. Not to say the coaches at Spurs arent doing that, but they arent on Barca's level

That was true of Barca but who is the world class talent they have produced in say the last 3 or 4 years ?

nothing of note but they have 5/6 players brewing in the academy...perhaps past players havent made the grade because they havent been given chances due to how strong Barca's team has been
