People need to realise we are a top top club now and it's even more difficult to bring through youth players.

I am a big Winks fan. But if he continues to carry on this form this year, or when he is back 'to full fitness', then unfortunately his Spurs career will be very short lived and that is the harsh truth of trying to make it at a top 4 club.

We had Kane come through and he went from strength to strength.

We had Dele and Dier bought in as youngsters, they have proved they are consistent and deserve their places. Much like Sanchez and Foyth are doing.

Now with have Winks trying to do this and KWP with fewer opportunities. I hear all this rubbish and moaning about Edwards, Onomah, KWP not getting enough chances etc etc. ITS DOWN TO THEM, no one else, if they prove to Poch and the team they have what it takes, they will make it. Look at Kane, Dele and Dier, all of these were young guys and look at them now. We do promote youth, but we aren't in the CHARITY business, because it makes a lovely story to promote a youth player through the ranks, results are more important than that. We aren't suddenly going to drop Dembele to give Onomah a chance in his favoured CM role, WHY would we do that? Onomah needs to go on loan to Villa and shine, he needs to shine and be better than Dembele every training session, he needs to get in earlier than him and leave later than him..... that's what Kane has done, we aren't a top 10 club anymore, we are trying to compete with the best, the youth players need to realise this.

But, all that said and done, we have implemented 3 English players into our starting 11 from youth in Kane, Dele, Dier and now added Sanchez as a regular. Who else out of Liverpool, Chelsea, City and United can say that.

Winks and KWP have already made It, they're both gonna improve and it will get to a point where they have consistent runs in the team.

I’m not so sure.
Me neither. I think recent events have knocked his confidence and rather than just playing his game he is second guessing everything, taking that extra touch to be sure and making the wrong decisions and that in turn is perpetuating his low confidence.

Hope he turns it around (unlike some apparently)

That injury has really fucked it. Was excellent and starting most games prior. Looked good for a World Cup place.

Now I can't see where he fits in at this stage of the season and when his next game will be.

He'll probably have a free summer which personally will disappoint him but hopefully spurs him on with a full pre-season to come.

I said a while back that i thought he would miss out on the England squad for the WC and with his ‘demotion’ to the U21s it is looking more and more likely...absolutely gutted for the lad those injuries are looking costly.

Anybody heard anything about Winksy’s attitude? I always imagine him to be a hard worker, but it’s weird for Poch to just completely cut him out the frame like this.

Not read anything good or bad.

All sorts of reasons Winks might not be playing. Low confidence, struggling with the injury etc.

Best not to speculate as will likely be kept behind closed doors.

Poch talks about Winks's problems in the Swansea presser - he's still not feeling 100% in his leg/ankle as well as being low on confidence partly as a result.

I'm sure Poch's handling of his game time will be key to getting back where he was. Good luck Harry W.

We have more options now than we did at the beginning of the season - Wanyama, Dembele, Lamela are all available + Lucas Moura. OK not all of those are direct competition (although they may well keep him out of the match day squad) and a fit Dembele keep Winks out of the team.

Why are people getting their pants knotted about Pochettino's 'treatment of Winks'.

As Singayid says it’s all out there.

You say Alli and Dier proved their consistency, but Alli was pretty atrocious for the first 2/3 months this season, bang out of form and not working hard enough either, the difference was when this was the case Poch didn't drop him and play Son instead he kept picking him - and spoke about the need to keep picking him through his poor form. And Dier hasn't been consistent, some of his performances have been very poor in CM, but again, it's taken until last weekend for Poch to replace him with Wanyama.

Now, I'm not saying Winks deserved to be starting every PL game, but lets not pretend Poch doesn't show massive favouritism to certain players, and that he's running a complete meritocracy here. There is no way he should be behind Sissoko in the CM pecking order, on merit/ability.

No one has ever suggested that Onomah should be automatically starting PL games ahead of a fit and in form Dembele, but we have suggested it might have been smart to give Onomah a go in his proper position, CM, in some domestic cup or pre-season friendlies.

That is the kind of thing people are talking about when they talk about fairer or better "chances".

I don’t think anyone would question winks work ethic or professional attitude. He seems a bit of a sensitive soul. It can be a very difficult situation if all the scans are saying there’s nothing wrong but he is still feeling pain. It’s highly feasible that everything can appear ok on a scan but nerves are still mending which can cause pain. Must be very tough for him on lots of levels.

I’m going to assume from your posts that you have never managed people, as if you had you would understand that everyone has a different mentality and responds differently to different approaches. Some like the carrot, others the stick.

Pochettino is clearly excellent at this aspect of management and perhaps he thinks players like Alli and Dier respond better to being picked when they are off form. But we also need to remember Pochettino is still a relatively young manager and learning and may make mistakes. However as he is with the players everyday and has been our most successful manager in recent history, I think we should probably give him the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, I am certainly not a massive Sissoko fan by any stretch of the imagination. However on recent form, he unquestionably deserves to be ahead of Winks. They have both had chances to start the cup games and Sissoko did ok and unfortunately Winks certainly didn’t. He was dreadful. And that is just the evidence from games we have seen. We have no idea how they are both performing in training. If Pochettino thinks Winks will respond better to some time out of the team because he’s physically struggling or confidence is low that’s good enough for me.

Not included in the matchday squad today, which to me confirms that he is now our 'spare man' (along with KWP) to the main rotation squad of 19. Shame for Winksy but probably the right decision for the team.
