I understand the arguments against, but realistically I don’t think it blocks Parrott as Parrott as is more likely to get minutes when games seem secure and starts in the league cup and FA Cup early rounds, while Llorente would come on on those days where we just haven’t clicked and are getting desperate, which will make use of Toby’s excellent passing from deep.

Additionally, Llorente has a winning mentality and bucketloads of experience at the very highest level, more than any player at the club, which is great off the pitch and in training. Even Kane can still learn from him in some ways I’d wager.

I’d actually think it could make sense to bring in Llorente but only register him in the Champions League, as that’s where centre backs struggle with him most.
Why would Llorente choose us over other clubs when he’d only be in the CL squad???

That one way was directly responsible for reaching the final though
Yes but I don’t think we should get that sentimental about it.

That one way is also a big reason for why we finished in 4th by just a single point. We basically play like absolute shit when he starts and I don’t think we have the luxury in this squad to take up a foreign player spot on someone who should only ever be on the bench.

The point is we can do better and quite honestly I think most players can do what Llorente did in the final. The actual hard bit was done by Alli and Lucas.

Signing and bringing on Llorente just screams of ‘Everybody panic let’s just lump it’. He has nothing else to his game unlike say Olivier Giroud or Mandzukic. We might as well have Crouch.

Id bring him back providing wages etc is minimal.

I see no harm in having a plan C/D?, I see no issue with lumping it up as a last resort.. it damn worked against Ajax...

He doesnt have much left to his game agreed but he also wont be costing 15m

He won’t be getting much game time anyway. I’d rather we give minutes to Parrott whenever Kane is unavailable or use Son & Lucas in a twin prong Attack.

If we just want to lump it up into the box for the last 19mims, would Toby or Verts be an option?

Both good in the air, and should be strong enough to hold off defenders.

With Ddombele and Lo Celso I don't think we need a plan b / long ball option anymore. I'd rather stick with Parrott who is on much lower wages and will have the energy for the high press. Llorente did a great job filling the gap until we got our midfield sorted.

We have a squad of 28 that already includes 4 x forwards (Kane, Son, Moura, Parrott). Why would we want to add another player who realistically won't even make the bench? Assuming our fist XI looks something like this:

Lloris
Foyth Toby Verts Rose
Ndombele Winks Lo Celso
Eriksen
Kane Son

We can then only pick 7 subs from the following 16 players (my 7 choices in bold):

Gazza
KWP
Aurier
Sanchez
Dier
Skipp
Davies
Tanganga
Sessegnon
Sissoko

Wanyama*
Dele
Lamela
Moura

Parrott
N’Koudou*
*Hopefully sold this European window.
Would you seriously leave one of those (bolded above) out of the match day squad to accommodate Llorente? I wouldn't. It's bad enough we might not be able to give bench time to the likes of Dier, Davies or Skipp.

Even if Llorente was only on £40k per week that is still £2.5M a year that we could put towards Dybala's image rights in January.

BTW - What a fantastic team / match day squad we have now!

re: the subs, I guess at least one of Lamela and Dele will be injured at any one time, so that gives us another sub to pick. But if Dele is fit, he will not tolerate the bench for too long.
If Dier is injured again, then this is possibly his last season. If he fully fit then MP has tended to pick him. He will at least be a sub as he can cover so many positions.
Also I would not write off Davies - Sessegnon might be seen more as an attacking option. We'll have to see how solid he is defensively before one of Davies/Rose are removed from the bench.

Otherwise I agree KWP, Aurier*, Skipp, Tanganga, Parrott are just going to have wait for their chance to just sit on the bench. KWP is going to be wondering in particular if this is ever going to work out.

And as you suggest, there doesn't seem much room for Llorente.

I know we did offer him a new contract, but weird how club have not released any info, surely if he rejected the offer we would of said something about him leaving?

Maybe he wanted to see if a European club wanted him (where he'd actually get some game time before he retires) and we said the offer was open until Sept 1st?

Brilliant post and 100% agree with this.
Only thing is that we are fairly likely to sell Eriksen this month which will mean one less attacking option which with a couple of injuries could leave us a tad light so that would be the only consideration for 1 more season of Llorente, but I hope we keep erisken in which case yes we absolouely don’t need llorente.

The headline literally says "unlikely" which is a far cry from saying "will not".

Don't really want him back but that's a heck of a misleading post.

Think you're being a bit unfair there.

The post quotes a credible London based media outlet and their opinion on the matter.

I think the term 'Looks like' is fair enough in this situation.

Any truth in the links that Llorente has been offered a contract by United? Not sure how I feel about him going there to be honest, but he's a free agent and he can choose where he likes

My United supporting mate seems to think its going to happen. I would've been happy for him to stay for another season, did a great job for us in the champions league last season.

I don't believe this "the style we will be playing this season won't suit his game" nonsense. The idea of having him in the squad wasn't to be stylish, but was to have another 6'+ body who was capable of causing some problems in the final minutes if we're chasing a game. A good few times last season it worked perfectly, and it's an option we suddenly lack again.

I don't know whether it was a disagreement about length of contract/wage demands, but I'm disappointed we seemingly aren't looking at re-signing him. Quite frankly if it was between him and Wanyama for the final PL/CL squad place I'd choose Llorente every day.
