a) many of his supporters can't tell the difference between his previous ability and his newfound abilities e.g., use of his right foot
Playing devil's advocate, maybe some of his detractors didn't acknowledge the use of his right foot (albeit sparingly) since first joining:

there's a point at which I get sick of a player who's constantly injured. Wanyama and Rose in particular, currently. It was the same for me with Erik. Not their fault, but a double problem in that you can't ship em out and they consume wages but don't contribute.

That's why Erik needs a good run in the team, contributing as he is now, before he gets hailed a true hero...

I have to admit I haven't been a Lamela fan over the last 6 years. But this season he's really upped his game. The (very effective) use of his right foot is evidence of a lot of hard work that has gone on behind the scenes - and full credit to him. Some of his inside forward play is Hazard-esque - and he's been doing it in a few games now.

Still has his faults - runs into trouble in central midfield positions (on counter attacks) and dithers on the ball too long, losing possession (happened twice against Wolves, for instance), but overall, he's a vastly superior player to previous seasons.

The concern for me is that

a) many of his supporters can't tell the difference between his previous ability and his newfound abilities e.g., use of his right foot

b) must we wait 5 years for each and every of our underperforming players to come good, just so people can say, "told you so"?
All your observations are pretty accurate but you are describing all flair players like Hazard, Silva, Eriksen.
They are all trying to make something happen and it doesn't always come off, that's the trade off with these players they lose the ball more than you think.
People watch MOTD and judge these players on five minute highlights, they didn't show Lamela losing the ball just scoring and assisting.
The only full season Lamela has had with us he was second top scorer (behind Harry) and second in assists not to shabby.
We didn't pay 26 Million for some average kid we paid for potential he was showing and he's been seriously unlucky with injuries.
We persevered with Lamela for a reason and hopefully that will now pay off if he stays fit.

I cannot fathom how any reasonable Spurs supporter wouldn’t love Lamela. He is the toughest player on our team, and it’s not even CLOSE. That alone should merit good will. Yet there is so much more to his game. He has this awkward smoothness that- when combined with his left footed-ness- makes him nigh unplayable. And he loves the club! The mind boggles...

The guy could ass-rape me and the only thing I’d do is ask him if it was ok.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that a player's medical condition is such an inconvenience for you.

Anyway, sorry but I don't plan on following your rules, I will be hailing him as a true hero effective immediately. Without him we would have at least 6 points less this season, which basically means that City would be out of sight by now.

Starting to become a crowd fav. Love this guy, and to be honest we all thought he was finished when he was away for so long. Love his determination, which has paid off handsomely.
You are not talking for me here
That's quite the statement...hadn't heard anything like this before.
Yes, some haters on this thread did spout this nonsense and the sad thing about it, some others were quick to believe!

that's a pretty high horse you're on there. I don't have any rules, champ. Just opinions, like yours. Just like my previous post lauding him for making the difference in so many matches so far this season. I'm happy you have a hero, and you think City remain in sight though.

I mean, no one here is (or better said, was) lauding Erik as a hero, we're all just very satisfied with how strong his performances and contribution have been so far. That's why I found this line of yours in such a poor taste:

"That's why Erik needs a good run in the team, contributing as he is now, before he gets hailed a true hero... "

Maybe I'm wrong but, to me, that totally sounds like someone who's annoyed by all the positive words Lamela is currently receiving and is trying to act as if Lamela still has something left to prove before earning the fans approval.

He’s been absolutely fantastic in the past few months, and boy have we needed someone to step up with all of the injuries.

I find it interesting how Poch is very tentative to hand praise out to him in press conferences though. He answered a question about him a few weeks ago, and again in a similar fashion today.

Essentially saying that he needs to do it consistently to get the acclaim.

Of course this is just good man management but I think it’s pretty much spot on in terms of Lamela’s past with us, and how I’ve viewed him. Individual moments of good play, but rarely cemented.

I am really just so pleased to see him doing it consistently now. He’s becoming a vital player for us, scoring goals and impacting games with his talent. Long may it continue.

I can't believe some people Lamela has always been a class player now with goals added to his game and injury free we'll be soon talking world class. He has the ability imo just needs a clean run.

haha. You said he's already your true hero- regardless. I'm more guarded, given his record, while giving praise for what he's delivered in the first quarter of the season. Yep, quarter of the season. Are you going to the game this evening, champ?

On a Fighting Cock podcast the question was posed,

"Which player, if cloned 11 times would beat our starting XI?"

So, for example, would 11 x Harry Kanes, or 11 x Dembeles beat our preferred starting XI.

The answer they alighted on, was Lamela.

I think I agree.

Imagine how intricate our play would be when everyone's on his wavelength. :D

I’d love to see Lamela pressing Lamela. Proper battle!

The answer is obviously none of them.
