The flak this guy gets is ridiculous.

Has nobody managed to identify that the season during which we’ve been more porous and had the least control of games has been the season where Dier has been by and large injured?

The guy is a leader and a player who does all the simple things at a very high level. I’m not saying he should be an automatic starter, but he is certainly a player we are better with than without.

I don’t think he gets much flak personally. I think not having Dembele and a fit Wanyama is the reason we dont have as much control over games and therefore look and are more porous. What are the simple things he does at a high level?

He’s nowhere near dynamic enough to play in CM and he can’t take the ball with his back to goal or under pressure. For example yesterday we had a free kick in the first half just behind the centre circle, he passed it back to one of our centre halves then ran behind Aguero so didn’t give them an option it then went square and he ran behind another City player and we ended up just booting the ball out of play, for me that kind of sums up Dier. I think when Wanyama came on we got more control and we were able to move the ball through the pitch much better and I think he also broke up play better. I know he’s just come back but to me that was a typical Dier performance. Onions and all that.

The only time I rated him highly is when he was playing in a back 3 in 16-17 season. Too many limitations to play in midfield and also makes way too many costly mistakes. Wanyama is the much better midfielder.

Couldn’t agree more.

If he has any sense he will move back to CB. Winks is clearly the preferred choice for a single pivot with Spurs and England that’s not even mentioning Rice. Has all the tools to be a great CB just needs to play there for a consistent period. He’s also a lot quicker than people give him credit for.

I did like him on right hand side of that back three when we were playing 3-4-2-1.

How is that clear? Dier has always been first choice when healthy the past 2 years. And how many games has Winks started for England that he’s clearly a preferred choice for England?

Interesting future for him, in my opinion our 5 best centre back, which I also feel is his best position. Good squad player to have, but this season for sure his regressed and others have overtaken him i.e Foyth.

Dier has his limitations but people are forgetting how little football he has played. Judging him in a makeshift midfield, just back after another lengthy lay off against one of the best teams in Europe is very harsh.

Poch rates him highly and generally speaking when hes fit, he plays. Over the past few years, when we have played our best he has played.

Very very good player to have in the squad.

i'd agree with this if wanyama didn't come back from 2 years no football to be putting in solid minutes of football

Winks was played ahead of Dier this season when Dier was fit. We are very flexible in formations now so obviously they can play together. But if we play a single pivot now I’m pretty sure winks is ahead of Dier.

his recent minutes have been solid, there have been many other minutes over the last couple of years that have been slow and ponderous. It's not a like for like comparison.

I have no axe to grind, but if you are going to compare them at least do it fairly.

Not to mention one of them is actually a specialised DM who has played there his whole career, and the other is a (partially) converted CB who is still being coached into the position.

Exactly!

His best and most consistent performances in midfield have been when he’s been a pure defensive midfielder. His level has dropped off when he’s been asked to play a more expansive game, which he can’t do.

Play him deep in midfield to help the defenders out and after a run of games and you’ll see his best form.

If he’s not to be played as the midfield destroyer then he’s a centre back. Poch shouldn’t let him be anything else.

Gets far to much stick when he plays as the the Dm it gave us so much flexibility with how we played switching from a back 3 to a back 2. It gave walker and rose so much more freedom. It would be crazy to consider selling him. He’ll be back next season stronger and better next season.

I would agree if he wasn't at Spurs. People are absolutely wetting themselves waiting for even the smallest error so they can blame him for everything. You can see it in this thread, he is next in line for the scapegoat treatment.

I thought he was superb today, especially with the ball - moving it forward into the front line quickly and efficiently. Shame our attackers had lead boots on today in regards to their touch.
