Alli almost slipped Spurs net as Levy had to be talked into £5m bargain buy

David Pleat has revealed that he had to plead with the Tottenham chairman to make a move for the midfielder and not risk missing out on his potential

Dele Alli was almost passed up by Tottenham, David Pleat has revealed, with the club having to be talked into a £5 million ($6m) deal which has proved quite the bargain.
Back in January 2015, Spurs raided the ranks at MK Dons for the highly-rated midfielder.
They were buying into potential at that stage and had no way of knowing whether their investment would be rewarded.

Alli has gone on to take in over 160 appearances for the club and net 52 goals, while also becoming an established member of the senior England side.
He is still just 22 years of age and can take his game to even greater heights as he chases down major honours with Spurs.
Those in north London could have missed out on him altogether, though, with Pleat having pleaded with chairman Daniel Levy not to let a talent clearly destined for the top slip the net.
The former Tottenham boss told talkSPORT: “I had seen a lot of Dele Alli and I was convinced.
“I had spoken to [Spurs technical director Franco] Baldini, I spoke to all sort of people about him, I was pushing, pushing, pushing.
“It wasn’t clever. He’d played about 75, 80 games regularly in men’s football for a team called MK Dons, nice people, just down the road. I saw a lot of him and I was convinced, given the opportunity, that he would do well.
“So, just before the deadline on, I think it was the January, I was going to a game at Luton and it was Daniel Levy [on the phone] and Daniel said to me, ‘This boy Alli, we hear he’s going to have a medical or he’s going to talk to Villa and to Newcastle. What do you think?’

Was interested to get some views on Dele Allis role this season with a change if formations or system and what he would need to do to make a real difference this year.
I think NDombeke with help open the field for a more dynamic runs into space but last season Dele did tremendous in defensive roles but wasn't as great a factor going forward.
Seeing as Lamela looked a lot better in the first preseason game, what holds fir Dele Alli this season?

I think dele is in for a challenging season, I think that we are setting up for a similar formation at Juventus did during their run to the champions league final when they had Pogba in the team.

It was roughly

Buffon
Lich Chiellini Bonucci Alex Sandro
Pirlo
Marchisio Pogba
Vidal
Tevez Morata

I think we are going to see Dele in that Pogba position personally, I think that this season will be challenging as he transitions into that role but long term we will reap the reward big time from it, Dele isn't as technically astute as the likes of Winks/Eriksen or even Ndombele/Lo Celso but Dele has unbelievable instincts, he makes incredible runs and has the Lampard ability to be in the right place at the right time. He also has tremendous physical ability which I think is why Poch is insistent on bringing him further back but the problem is he's not as good a passer as you'd expect from a player in that position. Now I think short term yes you'd like to see Dele in that free role but the upside to this new position could be so huge, we saw it in our first goal vs Juventus and the run he made, although he wasn't used, that extra man could make all the difference.

He needs to improve his passing and also when dribbling make better decisions but his natural sensibilities should see him shine in this role eventually.

I think unfortunately some fans are going to get on his back early but we need to give him the opportunity to develop in this new role before getting the knives out, there's such a huge possibility with him in this role and if we are patient we will reap the reward, so I'm pretty much begging all of you to get behind him tbh.

I think we'll be seeing an awful lot more rotation of players this season. There will be a few who start the vast majority of games but in both CM and AM areas I expect to see lots of options being used both from game to game and off the bench. Dele is right in that catagory.

I'm not sure how he would work that way with Ndombele apart from running into space and collecting the ball like the others will too.
Mind you as Dele can get stuck in,maybe as NDombele goes to the box,Dele can sometimes cover.
I do think Eriksen/Lo Celso will be a factor as well.
Lots of combinations available if it happens
It won't be a static attack!

Well in that Juventus formation, marchisio did a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of the defensive aspect and covering ground, whilst Pogba did contribute he was giving a bit of free reign to contribute more to the attacking aspect which is how I see it with us. I'd see it more like a Winks/Ndombele pairing with Dele with a little more free reign, Pirlo used to drop quite deep as the Cb's would split and receive the ball and play with it all infront of him, That's how I see Winks fitting perfectly.

Winks
Ndombele Dele
Eriksen

Is how I see it shaking out and then we'll see some rotation I imagine but that'd suit Ndombele, Winks and Eriksen I'd say. Dele will have the biggest challenge for the season as he is asked to contribute more defensively but still not a lot compared to Winks/Ndombele. All opinion though.

What the bloody hell has happened to him. Heard he had another very quiet game tonight

Can the real Dele Alli please stand up and can the more recent Dele please pull his finger out and concentrate on his football and not his image

It all went to shit when he left Eric for that Ruby Mae bird.

With that said, he needed other smart intricate passers on the field tonght. Moura is not that, Parrott is 17 and Wanyama and Skipp are ball winners. Dele made plenty of decent runs, but was rarely found by his team mates.

Looks like the typical celebrity player. Great early in career but then social media, girlfriends, fashion, lifestyle, money take over.

Thought he started pretty well, looked to get on the ball and make things happen, but we generally had trouble getting people into the box. He tried getting some combinations going, but Moura and Parrott weren't always up to it. His ball retention was mostly good, and even if the more riskier passes didn't come off, he didn't shy from the responsibility. He also made numerous dangerous runs, but was never picked out.

He also did well defensively.

Yeah, we lost to a bad team, but it doesn't mean that every single player was a complete travesty. Or maybe it does.
