Player Watch: Davinson Sanchez

He will be a better player than Toby eventually, he's still young

Let's see about that. Personlly think Toby is the best CB in the league not including VVD. Sanchez has a long way to go to reach Toby when he was at his highest.

Needs to improve with the ball at his feet. Foyth is superior in that aspect of his game and that's why I prefer Foyth playing in the 3. Sanchez looks nervous when he has the ball and misplaces passes or hits them too hard.

If he can improve that and cut out the silly mistakes costing us goals he will be great.

Agree re your point about comfort on the ball (especially v. Foyth) but the recent mistakes are coming from his body positioning against opposition strikers (which lead to the penalty on Saturday) but as you say, every reason to think he should improve given his age and Poch's knowledge of the dark arts of South American defending.

Thoughts on his performance last night ?

Seen some people saying he was outstanding. His pace is an obvious attribute and he is learning from two giants so that will all help long term.

I thought he made a few dangerous errors last night. Once again allowing the striker to get between him and the ball far too easily for a player his size. He also had a few miskicks which led directly to attacks on our goal.

I thought he looked really nervous tbh. He would have been a liability in 2 but playing in a 3 allowed us to cover his mistakes.

Sanchez has a very high ceiling and you can see his not the finished article but still very good. We defend in such a way that puts a lot of pressure on his athleticism . You will notice must headers chase backs and last man defending is on him.

I actually find him better in a two either way I think all our CB have looked under par this season due to our wingbacks and chop change at CB...though in the long run over seasons it’ll benefits our flexibility in games

Shaky first half. More solid in the second. Jan and Aurier bailed him out in the first half a couple of times.

Still plenty of improvement needed but impressed with the 2nd half.

I thought he done well in the centre of the back three last night. His pace in there was a real asset against there movement, and covered in behind to you and Jan really well.

Few shaky moments with the ball at his feet, but playing as well as he is at CB at his age is amazing. All CB's get better with age and experience. So he could be scary good in the future.

Sanchez is still shaky sometimes, making mistakes that Toby or Jan are not doing, but generally he is very solid and what is the most important - I can see he is making progress. He's more solid, more confident, his ball distribution is better, he more often decides to take a long ball switch to the wing (like Toby or Jan). He is 22 and already played two full seasons with PL and CL football. 40mln but for now it looks like he was worth it.

I think it's important to remember that he's still 22 years of age and is gonna make the odd mistake and look worse off playing alongside 2 of the best defenders in the league - This is his 3rd season playing in Europe, very happy with his progress thus far though.

This goes without saying tbh.

He's only 22 imo he will develop into one of the best defenders in Europe by the time he reaches 28.

But his performance last night was shaky. I was watching him last closely and he didn't looked assured in most things he did. It's all part of his development though.

He always looks a little clumsy to me, but he'll be an absolute beast in another couple of years. Him and Foyth are going to be awesome.

People saying he been making mistakes need to watch games and see how our defence as a whole have been poor this season. Last season Sanchez was superb.

Toby & Jan have been excellent. The fullbacks have been shit, but none of that has anything to do with Sanchez missing headers in the middle of the field or letting a striker run right in behind him.

The centre backs will improve when the midfield offers some actual protection (no blame on Sissoko and Winks) just like two seasons ago when we had the best defence in the league in back to back seasons.
