Because I watched him for Ajax for a year too. He joined us as a 21 year old, Jan was 25 and Toby 26 - anybody expecting the same level of performance or consistency at his age is being a big silly goose. Doesn't change the fact that, in the footballing world - he was higher rated as a prospect than either of them.

Not saying I expect him to be at their level. Just saying in order to make such a confident statement about him being better than them I'd have to see him perform regularly at their level or close to it, and so far we haven't seen that. We've seen a very raw but very talented player who I'm excited to see develop, but I've not seen him play in a way that I could definitively say he'll be as good as you're suggesting. I don't mean that as a dig at him nor do I mean it as a dig at you. As you say, we can't expect him to be at their level just yet. I hope you're right about it all obviously but it's just that I personally wouldn't feel confident making such a bold statement about him based on what I've seen so far. But I admire the optimism (y)

Don't understand some or the criticism around Sanchez. Yes he is still a little raw and makes the odd mistake, but he is shown he has the attributes to be a top defender. His attitude plus coaching will decide if he reaches his potential, but he is not a name I worry about on the teamsheet.

Is he at the level of Jan and Toby? Not yet, but I still remain optimistic be can reach that level in a few years. A bit of work on the training ground and another season's experience and he can get there.

I mean he played really well in his debut season in the Prem for us in Toby's absence, there was enough there to suggest he could be up there in the future.

Yeah like i say, I really rate him and in no way do I mean it as a dig at him. I just don't think he's done quite enough yet to definitively be able to say with any certainty that he'll be better than Toby and Jan, and nor do I expect that he should have. I hope he will be better, or even just as good as they are, but we just don't know yet based on what we've seen.

No words for todays game.... Absolutely a full shit show from him. Piss poor
If Jan was on, Joelinton NEVER scores that.
I had my worries about him since his first few games for us, so unstable and to many silly errors. He gets bullied when he's the on that should bully people. Terrible with the ball and his placement an game awareness/reading is not existing
He was going to be our primary replacement for TA/Jan. Fuck that...
I think Foyth will develop better at CB than Sanchez..

Thought he was good against city but absolutely no excuses for losing his man like that. Can only think he thought someone else was picking him up.

Time to take him out the spotlight, we're just not as defensively assured when he plays as opposed to Jan and he gets caught under the ball from high balls. If I was an opposing manager I'd be telling my players to put the ball in the air and win the 2nd balls against him.

Sure he'll improve but this isn't the time to expirement right now, you've made your point Poch but we're suffering as a result.

Reminds me of Aurier. Has moments and games where he looks a top defender, but disastrous the next. Some of his positional play, and awareness is horrible.

This is a real worry imo. This season maybe, next one it could be a calamity with Toby and jan leaving potentially. Awareness is terrible, gets caught under the ball every game, doesn’t know when to get tight, when to drop, gets bullied, not great on the ball and his recovery pace which is meant to be his biggest quality is actually fairly average. I think we need to reassess that area in January.

We should be all worried if he is the future. I have never been his biggest fan. Mediocre on the ball, loses so many duels and his positional play is dreadful. Yes he has some good games but there is no consistency.

Next summer we will need an entire back four...which is going to be a massive issue.

He is playing on the wrong side. He is more than OK as a RCB, but not yet good enough to play next to someone as junior as KWP - that would be asking for trouble.
As a LCB he is less than OK .

MP clearly sees him as a key CB for his new 5 year project, and for this season too, as Dier and Vertonghen have rather brutally been moved aside for him.
We just got to hope he quickly improves.

Aubamayang and Pepe will be licking their lips atthe prospect of facing him next week.

If he starts we will most definitely lose.

Yeah, that's what I said. How you came to that inference is anybody's guess. There's really no point in me engaging in discussion with somebody who has decided to spout such utter dog-shit in the first four words of their post - demonstrating your agenda straight off the bat.

Anyway - He's stronger, faster, better in the air. He's still only 23 and some of you lot are judging him as if he's an old-head like Jan and Toby are. He's only going to get better and that's in positioning, judgement, tackling technique and everything. There's a reason Barca were after him. As I say in my tongue-in-cheek edit - when we signed him he was higher rated than Jan or Toby have ever been (as a prospect).

He's going to make a lot of 'yer da's look dumb when he becomes one of the best in the world - which he will.

Really want to see Sanchez develop, and he will, still young and playing in the most challenging league. But, he really needs to calm down as a defender, and read threats as the game and play develops. His positional sense will improve when he has a better reading of the game, and I hope that happens.

As it is, he has a worrying lack of composure when he's faced up with any through ball played to an onrushing attacker. Nine times out of ten, he can give the attacker some space and put himself in a better, covering defensive position to stop the next attacking phase, instead of charging in and leaving himself and our defence exposed if he doesn't win the challenge.
