Toby & Jan have been excellent. The fullbacks have been shit, but none of that has anything to do with Sanchez missing headers in the middle of the field or letting a striker run right in behind him.
Our defence needs to work as a team. Watch Neville and the Gooner old guard talk about defending as a unit. CBs need to lead. Sanchez still young. When King was that age we bought in Naybet to guide him. Jan and Toby might be playing well individually but they need to make the defence work as a unit. They need to lead.

They do make the defence work as a unit. Poch's constant rotation causes totally unnecessary disruption to it.

We have had that for years with full backs rotating in and out and the defence still being tight, including Jan and Sanchez as the CB pairing for a season.

This season hasn't been that.

I’ve had a few reservations about Sanchez for a while now, but tried to put them to the back of my mind and try to consider his age and potential. But there’s just something about his style of play which worries me.

He’s not particularly strong or quick, lacks composure at times, and isn’t exactly great with the ball at his feet. Above all, I never feel entirely safe with him in the side, particularly in a back four.

Our clean sheet record with and without him supports this.

When he plays we lose all of our structure and composure. Also has a shocking ability to clear a ball.

He is young but Foyth seems far better.

I'm legitimately concerned about him, as well. Considering the amount we paid, how his first season went and the experience he has gained, I think it's fair to expect a pretty solid player with even more room for growth. He's regressed pretty steadily, he always looks rushed on the ball, tends to have lapses of awareness and just has periods of matches where doesn't look in control. Hope it's just a sophomore slump type of deal, but he's got to be better.

I think, with the ridiculous chopping & changing of the back 4, it's no surprise that our young options are struggling.

Maybe it's time we stopped pointing our fingers at the players & started asking WTF the manager is up to.

Only play him in a back three for the rest of the season. And he is still not close to Toby for everyone who says we'll be fine without him next year.

Never seen why we paid so much for him. No doubt the usual excuse of his age will be trotted out but what exactly is he good at as a Central Defender ? Big strong body but doesn't make it count, good height but rarely wins the ball in the air at corners or crosses, has some pace but not enough to recover from his own mistakes, etc.

Does he?

I don’t disagree that Foyth has a future here but can’t help but think Dav’s price tag is still at the back of our minds.

Listen he is young, and he’ll get better. I agree he’s been inconsistent this year but we’re going through a rough spell so I’d stop short of deciding he isn’t good enough quite yet.

I think Sanchez is quality. He could get into every single team in the EPL imo. People talking about him regressing should look how we're defending on a whole, our full backs have been absolutely atrocious and we don't have a specialised DM.

That is true, out defense has been the strongest in the past seasons. But Sanchez still make to many personal errors like our FBs, that Toby and Jan doesn't do.

A bit concerned about the step down in the summer once Toby leaves, was hoping he would have improved more by now to negate that loss but as things stand now not looking good.

Exactly. Praying Toby will just run down his contract, so Sanchez will get another year under his belt.

Sell Toby and Eriksen and buy quality DM and a CM and I wager suddenly Sanchez starts looking like a great buy again. Sanchez has clear faults, obvious at the moment a step down from Toby, and is also just fundamentally a different player

Also, can we please swap Sanchez and Toby's spot in the back 3? Like just one game to test it out and see if it works because putting your least experienced player in the position requiring the most decision making and decisive actions seems a mistake.

You've probably got a point there. Winks and Sissoko are not good shields and don't do a great job or relieving pressure either.

I prefer the 3atb lineup as it allows Sanchez to play clean up and let Toby & Jan get more active in the attack, as unfortunately due to our fullbacks and midfield we need their help to setup attacks.

People need to take into account that the ridiculous chopping & changing of the back line is fucking him up.

When it was consistently him & Vertonghen, he was bloody good.

It's simply not a coincidence that our defending has gone from being pretty much the best in the league, to nothing but mistakes & gifted goals, and the back line is being constantly fucked with.

Agree about the chopping and changing not helping but even considering that I feel there is still enough there to be concerned about, I haven't thought on too many occassions 'he was bloody good'.

Not quick? Are you nuts? He’s one of our fastest players. He might look a bit slower because he’s quite languid but i’ve never seen him outpaced and i’ve actually seen him run down quick attackers. Commentators also regularly make reference to how fast he is.

Calm down.

He's by no means slow, obviously, but he's not as quick as I thought he'd be when we signed him. Perhaps as he improves his positional sense he won't need to chase players down on the turn as much. A bigger issue is his struggles against particularly physical strikers.

I know he's young and can improve, and I really hope he does, but I have had niggling doubts about him for quite a while.
