Peak Assou-Ekotto edges it (imo). It's a shame benny wasn't really that interested in his job, otherwise he probably would have been world class.

That's not a slight on Danny - more of an appreciation of BAE when he put the effort in.

And following on from my previous post, i'd certainly have BAE as better, and (in my time watching) Ziege, who had a brilliant left foot. Hard to think of too many decent left backs we've had though in the past 20 years. Had a season ticket that covered Paulo Tramazini (?),Reto Ziegler ,Timothy Atouba and a very poor Brazilian who's name escapes me......it's not been a strong position.

I'm a bit anti Rose (and have stated it before), i just don't think he's as good as others think - so for that reason i'd be staggered if he got a move to a Juve/PSG type club as i don't think he's up to it and would be surprised if a big club with money felt they couldn't find better tbh. In fact i think Digne is better so couldn't have Everton interested either, although clearly Newcastle not good enough for him.

I agree with you. I also don't think he's as good as he thinks he is either.
I thought the club may just have had enough of his moaning and allowed him to look at alternative clubs.

Like you, I don't think any of the big guns will come in for him so he'll have to just get on with playing for us.
Unless our/his position is untenable and he'll happily move down to get away but I never felt things were that bad for us/him.

Christian Ziege was pretty special too

Yes - in some ways, though, I find it hard to appreciate players like Ziege who were playing alongside some of our most turdiest players in the PL, yet weren't in a position that made them stand out as stars (like Ginola).

Tarrico was a LB as well, wasn't he?

I like Rose, and he's a cracking player, but I think he's been similar to Walker for us - not quite consistent enough to feel like we'd be lost without him.

I don’t think it’s to do with money for Eriksen though as by all accounts there is a big contract offer from us on the table.

The same offer isn’t on the table for Rose. Whether that is to do with age, importance to the club or a result of his hissy fit in The Sun is anyone’s guess.

I didn't mean big contract as just money, more in terms of the stature of the club\ability to win things.

I think where Eriksen will only go (hopefully) to RM or Barca, Rose would fancy a Juve or PSG.
I just don't think they'd fancy him enough.

I'm more surprised by the timing as after the stadium, top four, the buzz of the CL final, new signings coming in Rose would have been more than happy.

Unless he burnt his bridges a while back and we held off as we couldn't get Sess done last year?

Agree BAE was better and Rose is a little overrated by our fans and other fans. Solid defender and quite good going forward but his end product is fairly poor, good player for sure very good even but not the best we’ve had and we can do better attitude wise and quality wise.

Yep Taricco wasn't very good and to compound it he was a nasty little bastard, who actually 'did' a few opponents in his time with us. I wouldn't have minded that so much if he hadn't fallen over and rolled around as if shot when anyone got close to giving him some back. Spurs or not, i can't have players who dish it out but can't take it. Good job i'm not an Arsenal fan tbh.

Rose was top class for about a season and a half (the two seasons he was on the PFA team of the year). A season or two before that people here were mightily frustrated with him and he hasnt fully regained his form since his injury.

Still remember people wondering why he was given a new contract.

Basically we’ve had terrible left backs for as long as most of us can remember. My first was Mitchell Thomas. Weird how it’s always been a problem position for us. I’d say BAE, Rose and Davies are probably the three best we’ve had over the last 30 years. Wow.

I remember being really upset when we bid for but failed to sign Andy Hinchcliffe one summer. Dark days.

Are these everyone from the Premier League era? Tried to rank them.

1 Christian Ziege (*)
2 Benoit Assou-Ekotto
3 Danny Rose
4 Lee Young-pyo
5 Clive Wilson
6 Ben Davies
7 Erik Edman
8 Mauricio Taricco
9 Justin Edinburgh
10 Reto Ziegler
11 Timothée Atouba (!)
12 Paolo Tramezzani
13 Gilberto

* More of a midfielder though, certainly not lb in a flat 4
! Not sure how one can rank Atouba, he was just something different

Pretty much spot on as to exactly how I’d have rated them.
