Have people forgotten he has been battling depression, also? Perhaps that first abuse in Serbia was what triggered it. Who knows. His salary or anyone's salary is irrelevant. I have worked in a store through its administration period and suffered immense abuse. My female manager had guys be sexist to her daily because we were an electronics store and they assumed she didn't know anything nor was even the manager. Male customers would just ask us questions and ignore her.

Racism, sexism, any form of abuse is unnecessary and what someone makes in their job should not be a reason for them to just brush it off. Have a look at the number of celebrity suicides over the years. Chester Bennington. Robin Williams. Gareth Speed in the football world. Their income and lavish lifestyle does not cure them of mental illness. Now add racist abuse on top of people claiming you should be fine just because you are rich. That then adds guilt and continues the cycle of depression, anxiety and guilt.

Should be applauding these lads for speaking up not judging re money they may or may not make.

It always astounds me ( though I don't know why I am surprised) at how terminally hard of understanding some people are.
Astounds me that people who try to explain the racism or downplay it by saying "yeah but he's rich, he's had mental issues" are allowed to be posting on this site.

Absolutely no margin for any of that shite, ban the people who can't wrap their mind around the fact that racism is a horrible and unacceptable thing

Edit: Would challenge any of the mods/admins to actively deal with those people, as the people justifying or trying to explain it are just as bad as the people doing it

Seems to me a stigma still exists regarding mental health. It can happen to anyone in any job at any time. The possessions you own, the life you live and the money you make do not matter in that discussion. Sickens me as someone who battles depression on a daily basis. I get loads of 'friends' go just stop thinking about it then! Or ignore it. Or just smile, shake it off! Yeah as if that works..

Agree to a certain extent but must be careful not to stifle debate.

Ok, so when you said 'you just look foolish', you weren't insulting me? Good to know.

Unfortunately, you don't get to decide who's allowed to speak about what, and when. You may not like my point of view, but I'm entitled to express it.

I get the impression you're using moral outrage as an excuse to be abusive. But again, that's just my opinion.

Good grief, that's not an insult and it's not abusive, look at the ratings under your post for example and the backlash, the post was stupid and makes you look silly.

Such a pointless thing to bring up but this is how a forum works my friend, you can speak about what you want as you say you're entitled to your opinion but don't expect not to be pulled up on it if it's a load of nonsense, is that fair?

As for moral outrage, Jesus I'm not even going to bother, as a black man in my mid 30's who has suffered abuse because of skin colour worse than you could ever imagine I find your whole stance on this insulting, don't even know why I'm engaging.

Yes it is but its not going to disappear any time soon. It could probably be handled a lot better (with continuing banning people that are explicit racist at games and work with changing peoples values and attitudes) but sadly we humans are very much tribal by nature and idiots exist everywhere. Public persons will automatically get more abuse and thats just the way it is. Thick skin is essential in all walks of life.

Personally I think we need the debate. People can always change and most do when they can see both sides of the argument.

Happy to be pulled up if I’m misinformed, and I’ve said I recognise in this instance there are deeper forces at work in forming Rose’s ‘attitude’ that I hadn’t considered in my original post.

The difference is, other people are able to express their disagreement respectfully, something you’re apparently incapable of. But then again, that’s nothing new.

Apologies I could have handled that better I agree.

I dont think punishing clubs is the way though... I mean how is it the clubs fault if some twat comes out with racist slurs etc? The club should be banning people ofcourse and they should be held accountable for it IF that person is identified etc.

Banning the actual club though is just disproportionate given it wouldnt be the clubs fault... Youre basically punishing a million odd fans for one (many) persons stupid and racial behaviour

Single fan incidents I agree, there will always be some twat. But what happened in Italy needs to be heavily punished and points deduction might be a way forward because leaving it to the club isnt enough

I kinda agree with the second bit although what I would say is you only punish the club if they dont ban the fans... then if it continues you continue to ban ban ban before you know it the fans will get the hint and the fan base diluted to the core of normal fans.

The thing is if we take the approach of banning then how would you propose it is done? The club cant predict who will say what and when...

Hard to say, I dont know enough about how bans work now but its clearly having little effect and theres a deeper social problem

I think next home game will be the loudest ‘DANNY, DANNY ROOOOOSE, DANNY, DANNY ROOOOOOSE’ he will ever have heard in his life. Hopefully that will make him feel a little better about things even if it’s just for 90 minutes.

Also, we’ll be playing City so he and Sterling should start making out in the centre circle before singing songs from musicals. That way we can worm out the racists and homophobes in the crowd when they start shouting racial abuse and throwing things at them. :cautious:

The other side of the argument is that if you punish the clubs they will be incentivised to act more harshly with fans that commit these offences.

Fans committing acts of racism in the stands = 3 points deduction = clubs losing more money than they are likely to be fined = clubs being more proactive to stop this from happening

I’m not sure points deductions is the way to go. Stadium closure fits the crime best IMO. Three strikes before first closure for three home games, and then every time it happens again, another three games. You’d pretty quickly see the crowd police itself, and anyone aiming racist abuse shutdown by the rest of the crowd.
