ESPN article which quotes from Standard article:

Under Pochettino, Rose has established himself as England's left-back but he says he is still learning in a role which he only started playing regularly when on loan at Sunderland in the 2012-13 season.

When he returned from the Stadium of Light -- where Tottenham play in the Premier League on Tuesday night -- Rose had the option of playing left-back for Spurs or playing in midfield for a Championship club.

"It is not my natural role," he said. "Even now I'm still getting used to it, understanding what I need to do from a tactical point of view. When I was growing up, I would never watch left-backs.

"I took the left-back option and look where I am today, so I am thankful it has worked out the way it has. I remember I got a lot of stick from Tottenham fans a few years ago when I had a bad season, but they need to realise that left-back wasn't my position. It was only my second year playing at left-back.

"The stick I received was very unfair and I was very unhappy after that season [2013-14]. This is the first time I have had a manager who has taken time to show me what I need to do better. That is why I have come on in leaps and bounds.

"I have done lots of drills, had one-to-one meetings with the manager, looked at video clips from training and games. I might sit in his office for anything from half-an-hour to two hours, discussing football.

Let me start off by saying I have stated many times that I believe Danny Rose is the most improved footballer Ive ever seen at THFC.

He is now by far the best left back in the league.

But, he wasn't always good. I used to think he was a poor left back. In fact, time and again I called him a left midfielder being asked to play left back. He used to be continuously out of position and caught dawdling time and again.

Now, we actually know why. How were we to know back then, we were watching a player never actually trained to play in the position he lined up in in the team? Surely, we fans we expect the players to be taught/coached how to play the role they are asked to play?

Unbelievably, its not until under Pochettino that he's being trained in the position he's actually playing in. I find that disgraceful on so many levels. The player was hung out to dry by his previous managers. It was them who should have been getting the stick, not the player!

As one of those that wasn't impressed when Rose got a new contract I'll apologise for about the 100th time. Probably my favourite player based on his determination, commitment and competitiveness. Unrivalled in the squad in terms of improvement and attitude change and fair play to the management for spotting something that most on this forum couldn't have foreseen.

If I was Levy and someone offered 100m for Rose and Walker I would just laugh down the phone getting progressively louder until they hung up. I don't think any amount of money would compensate for what we would be losing from our game.

Bravo Danny Rose, you've converted me to one of your biggest fans from this about your new contract:

Just no, for god's sake...

Bloody hell, constructive criticism of a player is one thing but the sheer vitriol and personal abuse against him in that thread is ridiculous and it's still going on with players now, Tom Carroll (before he left), Onomah, Janssen etc, you would think people would learn to wait and see.

If the manager who sees them in training everyday wants to keep them then there is probably a good reason behind it.

I missed the Sunderland game as I'm on holiday in New Zealand and it's all back to front with the times. How bad is the injury does anyone know yet?

He'll be out for 2 - 3 weeks*. Apparently that's about 6 - 8 weeks in New Zealand.

* I actually made that up. I have no idea if he's out & for how long.

Danny Rose makes shocking claim: I'm not used to doing this

DANNY ROSE has claimed he's still not used to playing at left-back.

The 26-year-old has been one of the best full-backs in the Premier League this season.

But he admits playing in defence is not his natural position after playing as an attacking midfielder when he came through the ranks at Leeds.

“It is not my natural role,” he told the Evening Standard. “Even now I’m still getting used to it, understanding what I need to do from a tactical point of view. When I was growing up, I would never watch left-backs.

“When I came back to Tottenham from Sunderland (where Rose spent the 2012-13 campaign on loan), I had the option of playing every week for Spurs at left-back, or pehaps playing in midfield on loan at a Championship club.

“I took the left-back option and look where I am today, so I am thankful it has worked out the way it has.

"I remember I got a lot of stick from Tottenham fans a few years ago when I had a bad season but they need to realise that left-back wasn’t my position. It was only my second year playing at left-back.

That (in bold) is really quite astounding. Who has Danny played under ? 'Arry ? AVB ? Dim Tim ? I guess when you look at these 3 it shouldn't be a surprise that the level of personal one-on-one attention/coaching is lacking I suppose. Who was he under at Sunderland, Fat Sam ?

Any news on his injury?

Losing both Vertonghen and Rose at the same time is a cruel blow. Severely weakens our defence.

Mauricio Pochettino told me Tottenham were looking to sell me as prank

Danny Rose has revealed how Mauricio Pochettino once pranked him by saying Tottenham were thinking of selling the defender - which left the England international "gutted".

Rose revealed the prank during an interview with Soccer AM, in which he said Pochettino called him into his office just after the left-back heard the news he was being called up to the England squad for the first time.

The 26-year-old said: "He called me in his office and he sat me down and said 'We've just received a bid from somebody and we are looking to sell you.'

"I was a bit gutted to be fair! And then after a while he told me he was joking.

"I tried to get my own back on him. He'd seen the news about China and that a club were interested in me. I told him it was true and he just said 'Yeah, OK then!'."

Rose also revealed how he considers himself the teacher's pet because he spends so much time in Pochettino's office, but admitted he shares a great relationship with the Argentine manager.

When asked why several of the Spurs players have previously labelled him "the gaffer's son", Rose said: "I'm in the gaffer's office quite a bit.

"He's normally telling me off! Over the last few years, I've created a great relationship with the manager and I speak to him quite a lot."
