Report: Eriksen turns down another contract offer from Spurs

https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2019/08/13/report-eriksen-turns-down-another-contract-offer-from-spurs/

The source they're quoting seems to be bollocks though... but if it is indeed true and he turned down a deal that paid him more than Kane, then WTF mate.

The issue is why would he accept a contract when he could walk and go to any club he wants while also making Aaron Ramsey money which is just beyond absurd

Not really a compromise for him though is it.
A club paying us £60 million next summer means a decreased likelihood of a huge wage packet and signing fee for him.
Walk away for free and a chunk of that £60 million potentially goes in his pocket!

How much realistically would he get of it?

What is the difference in money between finishing 3rd/4th or 5th/6th and missing out on Champions League? If it is more than the prices being rumored for Eriksen than don't sell him and let him leave on a free. If we lose Eriksen this window we most likely won't get top 4 and the money that comes with it. That was pretty clear against Villa.

Unless we introduce Son and/or Lo Celso maybe.

There is some degree of risk for him in waiting. There's a contract offer worth probably £50million+ currently on the table from Spurs (I'm assuming 5 years at £200k pw). If he signed the contract today, that money would be guaranteed. He may be able to secure a better deal elsewhere down the line, but what if he suffers a bad ACL injury or a similarly career altering injury in the short term? Suddenly the only guaranteed money is the remaining few months of his £75k pw deal.

Serious injuries are quite rare, but not so rare that they can be completely discounted as a possibility.

Not to mention the fact that should he not sign and also fail move this summer he could end up spending a lot of time out of the team. Should he sign he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet.

I genuinely believe it's not all about money with him, the issue will come down to how willing Levy is to put in a reasonable release clause (for RM/Barca).

I'd hope we weren't offering him more than Kane. At least without another contract for Kane in the works.

That's the problem though. Aaron Ramsey is on 600k at Juve so whatever we offer is likely to get blown away. I don't think Eriksen is driven by the money particularly though, but it's up to us to convince him this is the place to stay in the next 6 months.

Eriksen quotes from June. Particularly relevant is this part:

“It depends on the possibilities. If there are no exciting offers why shouldn’t I stay at Tottenham? If I then sign a new contract depends on the conditions,”

Seems to be either RM or possibly a few other very select clubs that would be a 'step up'.

This actually makes me more confident he will sign an extension. He hadn't ruled out the possibility at this point of signing a new contract should any move not materialise.

Not only this but the situation has changed imo since June. We've signed 3 very good players without selling one first team player thus far. I honestly think we are a better team than RM at this point. RM is not really a 'step up' anymore. I do still think this is the particular club he wants though.

Reading between the lines of JJ ITK as well I reckon he's seeing if RM come in and if they don't he will hopefully re-assess. Reckon there's a possibility of say a 2 year extension maybe with a release clause.

From what I hear his strop seems to be over. I'm guessing it was down to frustration and not knowing what was happening Madrid have really fucked him about tbh.

He will however need to sit down and sign a new deal otherwise we will look to sell if we can find a buyer. It's just too much money to let him walk away on a free.
Is it really worth selling him for £50m as missing later stages of Champions League and Top 4 in the premier league would be more than that amount I am sure...

We can offer him a contract making him the highest paid player at the club, but I can't see why he would sign it until the european transfer window shuts and his dream move fails to materialise. And even then I would be reluctant to sign if I were him.

It is not just a question of how much more he could earn this season versus running down his contract, we also need to factor in the money he has left on the table over these last few years by refusing to sign a new contract. He has chosen to remain massively underpaid compared to other players of his calibre and he has done so purely to be in the position of control he is now in at this crucial point in his career. So why would he throw that away at this stage?

I think he will only sign if he becomes convinced that not only will Madrid or Barcelona not be coming for him now, but will also be unlikely to in the future, but why would they tell him that even if they don't want to move for him now. It is in their interest to keep him hanging and at least leave him hoping if they might get him for free. And if he signs a contract with release clauses for these clubs he is only transferring money from his pocket to Spurs', while also making it less likely that these spanish clubs come in for him. It would make no sense.

I am resigned to losing him, as much as I want him to stay, but hopeful that he will still see out the existing contract so we at least get him for another year and have time for Lo Ceslo to adapt to the PL. Even if it means we don't get any transfer fee, 11 million for 6 years of Eriksen is an absolute bargain by any standards and might end up being the best case scenario for all parties concerned.

It is true that he would have no security, and I would love to have him stay and be motivated to take Spurs to the next level for the next few years. But there is an argument to say that if he signs another long-term contract we may end up with an unmotivated player resigned to losing out on his dream move and facing a career that has flat-lined, whereas an Eriksen who gambles on running down the contract, puts himself in the shop-window and absolutely needs to impress might be an awesome thing to behold, if only for 12 months...

A point that people often don’t mention is the fact that WE can also offer a large signing on fee for a new contract.

I don’t think his reluctance to sign has been purely down to money, though. I genuinely think he wants to move to a new league with a mega club.

If they offer doesn’t materialise I think he will stay with us.

I am sure we could keep him if this happens. Surely it would be in our interests to try to match any offers from rival clubs.

I think he only leaves if it’s Real or Barca, or maybe PSG or one of the Italian giants.

He might just fancy a change in his career now. If that’s the case and his mind is made up there is little we can do.

Hopefully though he’s still thinking along the lines of those quotes in June and if nobody comes in for him by the end of the month then he will sign up.

I maintain that’s the wrong move for him personally and he should sign a pre-contract somewhere else in January for mega money. Obviously I want him to stay and sign for us but if his mind is made up to go then we are going to have a hard time changing it. London isn’t a bad place to live though, not as hot as Spain but an easier place for a Scandinavian to live in than Madrid, you’d assume.

Eriksen must now be aware that anyone who makes a move to sign him are basically only doing so as their first choice targets aren’t available. Pogba clearly 1st choice at both Real and Juve. It might be his dream move but a strange situation clearly knowing that your new employers wanted someone else.

Then again we could keep him and still miss out on top 4 or sell him and get top 4.
If Eriksen will not sign a contract you can bet your bottom dollar levy is doing everything to sell him in the next few weeks.

If someone (NOT gonna happen) came and offered me the job I had always been dreaming of, included a huge monthly salary, I wouldn’t care if I wasn’t their first pick. Eriksen problay won’t mind either...

So many variables go into these big transfers. Making it into the “ten man list” of RM top transfer targets means you are a hell of a player whether you are their top pick or not

He could do with a little nudge on the 'grass isn't always greener' front IMO. He'd be a relatively small fish in a huge pond at RM, and some of the egos and prima donnas there would make him a goldfish amongst sharks. It seems a highly unstable club at the moment to me and they constantly hanker after the next shiny thing. Zidane has the aura of a loose cannon and there are a bunch of players there capable of consigning Eriksen to a minor role. As I've said before, we have 6 months to convince him he's better off here.

He's off one way or another IMHO. Can't see him going to the trouble of running down his contract to this stage if he's intending to stay. I'd like to be wrong but...
