But what if a player doesn't want to be sold when he has one year left on his deal? If a player goes into the last year of their contract with their mind set on all the options a free transfer would afford them, there's not really much that the club can do to make them go beforehand.
Perhaps the figures involved will have changed his perspective but Eriksen extended his contract by one year at Ajax specifically so that they'd get a transfer fee for him. He's not the type to leave a club who has contributed to his development with nothing to show for it, but then the money being bandied about is in a completely different realm now than it was then.

Poch has previous for freezing players out if they're not committed.
Just because he doesn't commit to a new contract doesn't mean he won't train and play hard. For what it's worth I think Eriksen will keep doing his best but I don't think he will sign again with us. Eriksen doesn't strike me as the type to start causing a fuss or moaning so I don't see why Poch would drop him. By all accounts Toby has done worse and he's back in the fold. He will be in constant contact with RM and if they tell him to wait he will. Personally I think he is pretty much gone, just at depends on When.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying that I think the club will look at things and put pressure on him to leave if he won't sign up, nothing about being disruptive, the club will not want to lose money on an asset they can get money for.

Not that I’m wishing this on any player but football could really do with a player whose running out his contract so that he can get a massive pay day elsewhere getting a career ending injury a few weeks before the end of his current contract. That would sharpen a few players minds. Just a shame it didn’t happen to a certain guy that did it to us all those years ago, his name escapes me now :cautious:

Why should a player not be able to run out his contract. The club signed that contract also. We complain when a player wants to leave before his contract is up but we then complain when he chooses to honor the contract to the end???

Maybe clubs that are signing someone that has run out their contract should show a little financial discipline and not double/triple their wages because they got them on a free! That would do a lot more to solving the problem.

You would also have to take into consideration he has now missed out on maybe 100k a week in payrise for 1-2 years... As I assume thats what he would have gotten if he signed new contract...

Really a bad decision by him involving a lot of financial risk... he could always Get his move - they all Do!..

Hmm, that Ramsay wage has just burst the bubble of hope I'd had for Eriksen signing a new deal. Fucking ridiculous money. Every player in world football is going to be demanding a pay rise now!

No ... every player will be running their contracts down as they know they'll get a hefty signing on fee spread over their contract. For example, if we sold Eriksen last summer he would have cost a big club £100M+ plus £200k+ per week (based on Coutinho move to Barca). If Eriksen runs his contract down (which he appears to be doing) ihe can leave for free and he'd be saving his new club £100M+ in fees so would get a massive 'salary'.

Well, if that's football's new model, any aspirational teams are fucked and oil money wins.

They're the only clubs that don't need the transfer fees and any clubs taking punts on future superstars will end up losing them to the 'super' clubs for free.

Sounds like a pretty shitty tipping point, either way...

Bale signed an extension a year before his transfer knowing full well he was leaving. I assumed he did it so Spurs would get some money for him. Eriksen ought to do the same, IMO. I dont know how much of a hit he'll take in wages - but we've done our part as a stepping stone.

Pretty sure Bale didn’t have much say in that extension in that we took up an existing extra year clause in his contract and announced it so it sounded more positive than that.

according to wiki he signed a four year deal in the summer of 2012. he signed a new contract every summer until he left for Madrid.

Marcotti says Ramsay is getting 250k not 400k.
If anyone will know Italian football, it’s him
It depends how you look at the deal. His salary will be 250, but his signing on bonus will be spread out over the length of the contract, taking it up to 400k. Basically Juve figure the signing on fee is cheaper than a transfer fee, and that’s how they work it in their budget.

He doesn’t owe the club anything financially. Because he did the same thing at Ajax, we got him for the absolute steal of £11m, and he’s been here 5 years earning less money than he could have got elsewhere.

The irony in that last sentence is fucking delicious :hungry:

I'll tell you what's pathetic, you writing paragraphs upon paragraphs to put down one of our very own players, think about that for a second - you are an incredibly shit fan, you shouldn't be anywhere near our club.

You do realise I'm only doing it to prove a point because of how far the Eriksen lovers take it the other way? Anyone would think that we have Hazard, De Bruyne and Silva combined in one player the way they go on about Eriksen. The guy is so overrated it's ridiculous but many of you seem incapable of understanding that I can rate a player's ability alongside him being overrated. If you look back through my posts you'll see me mention plenty of times that he's one of the most naturally gifted players I've ever seen play for us but his lack of being able to do it for long periods of games consistently is what separates him from the aforementioned players.

In terms of me being told I'm an incredibly shit fan by a guy that spends the majority of his life on a football forum, never at games and goes out of his way to call anyone he can out on things they said months previously that's probably a compliment. If you're what is classed as the epitome of a great fan then there really is no hope.

Thanks for those spam ratings guys, not sure how I'm going to sleep tonight.

Does everything have to be so black and white? Personally I think Eriksens all round game has been really below par the past few weeks. His touch, simple passing is poor, bottling challenges like no tomorrow.

Yet no one can doubt his quality in the final third at times, he’s easily one of our best players. I just find it really weird how for 80 minutes of a game he literally plays like garbage, and you think to yourself, this guy is playing terribly, and then he pops up with a fantastic assist or goal.

How can such a talented player fail to do so many simple basic things right consistently? If people analyse his game recently, his all round game has been garbage, but then pops up with moments of magic.

It’s really quite strange. I don’t see the likes of Silva for City making such poor decisions, touches and passes so consistently in the basic parts of the game. It really affects us negatively when we are trying to build momentum and possession in the final third.

If he does go to Madrid, he will absolutely need to sort that part of his game out. He can’t be losing the ball so often as he does for us. They’ll slaughter him.

I couldn't really agree more with what is written above here. The only chance he will end up at Madrid is on some Ramsey type deal where there's no transfer fee. I would imagine world class players like Hazard are far higher up their radar.

It seems Eriksen polarises opinions in the way Bale and Modric never did. Fwiw its worth I think he's a very good player and I hope we keep him but he's nowhere near the class of Hazard and Coutinho.

To me he's an instinctive player, his shots, crosses and passes in open play are entirely different to his dead balls which are dreadful. Its been said he wants Madrid but it seems they don't want him, thats only a guess but might explain his quiet spell. Hazard for example is Chelsea's stand out player most weeks, I can't remember the last time Eriksen was given MOTM on here

Criminally underrated :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Jesus christ, just think about that for a second. Firstly that implies that people do not rate him or rate him well below his actual standard, which simply cannot be true when you have so many people waxing lyrical over him in this thread (that's not including other teams fans or commentators/pundits).

Secondly, I fail to see how running the furthest but putting in the fewest challenges benefits the team? If he runs 30 yards to put in a half-arsed challenge that the player with the ball simply glides past then that helps us in no way whatsoever. The reason people love what Lamela does is because the challenges he makes are tangible. The reason Sissoko is being praised so highly this season is not his skill on the ball but the tangible lung busting runs in the 90th minute that relieve the pressure on us.

Thirdly, Eriksen is rated very highly whether you believe he is underrated or not. What I will ask though is how often you see the players at Man City (such as De Bruyne) having games where they'll put 5 crosses, 3 free kicks and 4 corners into the first man? This is supposed to be his speciality ffs. Once again, the Hazard's and De Bruyne's of this world are a cut above Eriksen but even if you think I'm talking absolute nonsense then we can just look at the fact that Eriksen has not had a single bid in for him at his time at Spurs. If he ends up at RM I will come back into this thread and state I was wrong all along.

What I don't get is how we see Eriksen with all the ability in the world and people aren't calling him out more for the utter dross we get from set pieces or corners far too often? I can forgive Sissoko not scoring because he's clearly not in the team for that but when we have a free kick from 25 yards I now sit there praying Eriksen leaves it for Lamela or Trippier. One FK goal vs Juventus that Buffon should save in the last 3 years? Maybe one more that I'm forgetting about but it's simply not good enough, ESPECIALLY when I have to read here how underrated he is.

@dude573 If every player in the team pulled out of challenges like Eriksen did just to avoid injuries we wouldn't be a very successful team.

Also who else is surprised that Shadydan pops in with his usual passive aggressive bait every time a player (no matter who it is) that has once been criticised has a good game? It's fucking pathetic.

I agree (y)

A payrise of £100k every week for 2 years really would be a lot of financial risk. :cautious:
