but I don't think he's reached anywhere near the heights of last year that saw him become one of the very best 10s in the world.
Well - I think the answer is simple: He has not really played as a 10 for much of this season.

When asked to play a different role, you can't compare his prior role/results to this season. He plays well, just in a different capacity - thus the tangible results you want: goals/assists are not in-line with a 10, but they are plenty for an 8

Think this a very limited view
of what football is about.
Watch him on the counter
Often leads the charge.
He is not slow.
Watch him when he hasn't got the ball
he is finding space
to receive the ball.
A team of hard tackling beasts
is overkill.
Someone's got to do the thinking
and forward planning.
Others are much better equipped
to win the ball.
Many of our hard men
have limited passing ability.
Bang on, also watched him closely a number of times when the noise about also seen him doing zero without the ball. Guess what, he does, interceptions and closing of players is part of his game. He’s not Vic but that’s not his game but he’s far from idle.

Last season he achieved twenty combined goals and assists in the league (ten of each) in thirty seven matches, all starts. An output of one goal or assist every 1.85 matches.

Currently, in twenty two appearances, five off the bench, he is on 8 assists and four goals. An output of one goal or assist every 1.83 matches.

He is on course for 19 combined league goals and assists if he avoids injury.

Only David Luiz and Jorginho have played more through balls this season.

Clearly a very good return on attacking stats, but is he just staying high up to provide key moments? Nope. Outside of our defence, he has had the most touches in our side, and outside of our defence + Winks, played the most passes.

While I agree that he doesn’t seem quite at full power, the above suggests that he’s still having a very good season.

Good news for us if he's staying he's a very good player. But as I and others have pointed out Real choose the best, Hazard is a class above Eriksen and I'm sure his dip in form has coincided with discovering they don't want him.

Needs to sign a contract and knuckle down

Also if most of the people you are assisting are not playing it’s going to impact your return

I think it's pretty clear De Jong was earmarked as the Eriksen replacement, and would have been an incredible one.

Problem is the elite have had to shop lower down the ladder than ever before since Neymar/Mbappe broke the market. Before they would wait for someone like us to buy the player before taking them at the top of their game...

Not sure how De Jong could be Eriksen replacement as the place completely different positions?

De Jong plays deeper as a defensive midfielder so for me if anything they’d play in same team.

This thread has become like a scene from Jacob’s Ladder that was cut from the film on the grounds of being too fucking weird

It goes without saying that I'd love him to sign another contract but if all efforts to persuade him to do so fail and he leaves, if Hazard leaves for RM, I wouldn't want to run the clock down and get a reduced fee for him, and about the only other deal I would find acceptable is a swap deal with Barcelona involving Coutinho coming the other way, he is a similar age and has a proven track record in the PL with a really good ratio of goals and creativity to go with it in the PL. We cannot let him go to another PL rival that has to be seen as unacceptable or unthinkable. Swap deals rarely come off but if they did I'd just about find this one palatable. We simply can't afford to lose a player of Eriksen's influence on our play and replace him with someone who is way too inferior or has nowhere near the same amount of creativity. If Coutinho could provide Kane and Son et al with type of service that Eriksen does and pick them out with killer passes in the way Christian does, and I believe he could in the way he did for Liverpool's other forwards and AM's and chip in with a decent ratio of goals I wouldn't be averse to it.

Probably ate into their ‘regular’ budget. Means Eriksen is off. Hazard will come out of the Galactico budget innit.

Coutinho wouldn’t give us the time of day. His wages are probably bigger than Kane’s too.

Eriksen has been playing deeper and deeper for us this season, and has become our creative hub. Although a more traditional CM (who can even play as deep as CB) I think FDJ was earmarked for that role.

It'll be very tough to find a like for like replacement for Eriksen since he's so tactically flexible and can play numerous roles. If Eriksen leaves and Poch wants to replace him, it may not be for a typical no. 10-player.
Even if it should be obvious that what we really need in this squad is more passing ability.

I agree that this would probably be the biggest stumbling block in any swap deal, but if he wanted the opportunity to play regularly and feature as a key player and he was willing to be realistic on wage demands it is one of the few options that I would like to see if we had no choice but to let Eriksen go.
