Excellent analysis though you make one fatal oversight: the emergence of Danny Rose as a box of frogs mental central midfielder
Danny Rose in midfield is like reaching into a box of Cadbury's Roses and pulling out a live frog...

...then realising it's strangely delicious...

...then throwing up all over yourself.

I completely get Eriksen coming out and saying what he said about a new challenge etc but it is a shame because now if he doesn’t get his move I just won’t feel the same about him next season, if he’s not covering every blade of grass we will all just assume his head isn’t in it :(

For that reason as squad and player harmony with fans is very important I really hope Madrid sign him, ideally we get Isco or ceballos or Asensio the other way.

Maybe Christian is in the same WhatsApp group as Poch, Toby and Danny?!

Could the "new challenge" be the same as Poch's "new chapter" and Danny's "this club hates old people" and "I wish Google had all the answers"?

Find out next week on Why Do Spurs' Players Look Weirdly Happy And Friendly In Difficult Circumstances Considering All The Potentially Dramatic Situations Happening Behind The Scenes?

personally I think Eriksen's loss of form has been greatly exaggerated. 27 combined goals and assists - only bettered once in the last 5 years.

The numbers may suggest that, but watching his performances last season he gave the ball away more than in all his previous seasons combined.

Definitely didn’t seem mentally focused a lot of the time to my eyes.

It could just as easily have to do with WC hangover and mental and physical fatigue. Dier, Kane, Alli, Trippier, Eriksen - all guilty of having an up and down season. The only player that has been truly consistent is Sissoko.

We have been collectively bad this season and if we'd just focus on the actual fooball and not the results it's probably the worst season under Pochettino. Which is ironic since it also contained some of the most memorable Spurs moments in modern history. Anyway, I agree that Eriksens contact situation and so forth has most likely effected him but I also believe we fans have a tendency to overexaggerate and emphasis once aspect while ignoring a multitude of others.

He's been contributing alright, and he's been pretty good. I think he can be better though and imo the best we've seen of him was the few months after he signed his last new contract in 2016.

Lets do a final check on Eriksen's poor season, in comparison to previous years:

So, other than the rather arbitrary overall rating score at the bottom, Chris is pretty much on par with his last two seasons, with 6/7 starts less. So maybe he's not been catching the eye as much, due to a withdrawn role and an inconsistent midfield/attack around him; But his contribution was certainly not lacking.

That's the thing... His overall figures in terms of goals and assists have been good but it's been in spurts, but in a way that can paper over some cracks.
Overall he hasn't been as consistent throughout the season, he's gone missing in more games and shows in his overall rating. I don't think that can be dismissed as it's a good sign of his contribution from the season as a whole. I'd rather 8/10s every game, than a 10/10, then a 6/10... If you see what I'm getting at.

That said he's a wonderful player and I'm sure he'll benefit massively from the likes of Ndombele in the team. I really hope he stays!

Kane hasn't been consistent enough.
Dele hasn't been consistent enough.
Dier hasn't been consistent enough.
Trippier been shit.

.. yeah you could really go on in our team. It's only Sissoko/Son & Toby you can say has had a good season.

WE as a TEAM hasn't been consistent enough.

That has effected Eriksen as he's the only one in our team who can pick a pass and be creative.

Give him some better players and he will shine.

Very interesting, thanks for the post. Certainly, some signs of consistency of output but I think the rating isn't as arbitrary as you say. The feeling was his general performances were down, not so much his stats. The rating backs that up. And the MotM numbers do the same. MotM halved from 16/17 to 17/18 and then halved again last season.

For one of our best talents to only be the best player on the pitch twice in a season speaks to the problem, I feel.

Still hoping he resigns and think with a good break and renewed focus he could have a massive bounce back year.

Dude come on. Kane Dele Dier Winks Lamela have had injury problems but players of Eriksens ability are supposed to stand up and lead by example in the others absence fact is he didn't he was worse now if Son or Kane was our only fit player key for the whole season they would stand up Eriksen just didn't

I did think once Eriksen basically come out to say he wants out for a new challenge we would have to sell him. If the next level club fail to come in for Eriksen where does that leave him.

I recall Steve Gerrard how we wanted out of his boyhood club for Chelsea and he came back guns blazing.

Eriksen was running on fumes at the end. There was CM, AM, striker injury devastation going on all around him...falling like flies. He did stand up, but he can't make up for all the injuries we suffered, or the obvious shortfalls in our squad.

The key with Eriksen is will he be able to control a game.I haven't seen that in him. Yes many plays go through him and he facilitates but does he dictate a game like Modric has?
It remains to be seen. Zidane has been there,he did dictate games
