I think rather than a defensive midfielder, which in the traditional sense is a destroyer and protector of the back 4, we're talking about playing Eriksen as a pivot, in the Alonso/Pirlo sense. Which he could probably do quite well.

However that would entirely waste his true talent, at which he is world class at, in the attacking hook role.

You can drop Eriksen deeper without him playing as a DM. He drops deeper anyway. You're finding a problem when there isn't any.

A deep lying playmaker and a defensive midfielder are different roles and different positions. Was pirlo a defensive midfielder? Nope. His job would be soley to find space in deep areas in the central areas of the pitch and dictate play as well and picking out the 3 forwards. Right now on the teamsheet he IS one of those forwards. Theres a big diference

The fucked up thing is that they actually need an Eriksen type player

I do wonder what transfer strategy, if any, these type of clubs have.

It’s nothing new either, they did it all the time under Fergie. For every Carrick and Ronaldo, there was a Veron or a Djemba Djemba.
A fact often overlooked when marvelling at what a genius Alex Ferguson was.
The money they spent for success in comparison to everyone else was breathtaking.
Like Pep and Maureen its a lot easier to look a football genius when you can spend spend spend.

I lurch between wanting him to stay and not being bothered. But my knee has landed. I've decided to get off the fence. If he stays its a bit of a coup for the club, players of his quality don't grow on trees, he hasn't been as bad as some of us have made him out to be and even if he hasn't had the best of seasons I'm sure he'll do better next year.

If he signs an extension and we have a reasonably productive window, I’d expect him to be an energised monster for next season. His erratic form has mirrored the nature of our season but he’s definitely improving since we moved to our stadium, and his long pass to Son on Saturday which should have resulted in a goal was exceptional

It’s a win-win for us if he signs.

If he still underperforms next season, at least we would be in a stronger position to get a better fee for him.

But I think his recent poor showings has been partly due to his predicament on whether to join a bigger club or stay with us. If he signs an extension, I think we will see the Eriksen of old back again.

Replacing him would be incredibly difficult. I think he is still quite underrated by some because of his personality/demeanour.

You landed in the right place, but that's not exactly a question that would have had Plato scratching his head as he pondered between two philosophical arguments that both seemed equally valid, is it? Wanting Eriksen to stay is surely a bit of a no-brainer, right?

Such a shame that we already had the perfect competition for Eriksen with Sigurdsson and let him go. If Poch had had the chance to work with him we would be sitting pretty

Is he really underperforming, or has he been playing a little deeper this season.

Maybe not as consistent this season, but looking at those numbers, he's certainly aided the team again this season and I'm of the thinking that he'd be sorely missed if he were to leave.

In fact, I'm quite intrigued to find out when we became such a big club that we'd consider letting Eriksen go citing him as being an underperformer with returns like the above.

If he wishes to leave, so be it. But let's not kid ourselves and pretend that he hasn't been a key player regarding our exploits this season yet again.

I posted earlier, for me Eriksen has embodied the club’s situation this year. He’s looked wayward and tired, but has dug in to show some fairly good stats this campaign. That’s really been us this season too; we haven’t been the most aesthetically pleasing but somehow we’re in the semi finals of the Champions League, third in the table with some decent fixtures remaining and where we finish is in our hands and not solely reliant on the performances of others.

And we’re in our own ground, which has coincided with Eriksen improving
