Are Spanish clubs really that skint? Would be a mildly odd move for him to go to Feyenoord.

This is why I always try and stay grounded when we snap up young talent - I seem to remember we all thought the club had done really well to land him and he was a real upcoming talent.

That's the model though. He's been pretty sort after for loans, wages aren't too high and clubs are still willing to take a punt to unearth a gem. Works for us as long as we do our due diligence and don't go for scatter gun approach to young talent.

He’s gonna be another player we’ve spent big money on that no one wants on a permanent deal, so we’ll have to loan him out until his contract expires. Truly an absolutely atrocious signing for the money and assets (Lamela) outlaid.

Meh, I loved Lamela as much as the next guy, but I think most felt this was a savvy move, at the time. It just didn’t work out, it happens.

Could be most beneficial here striking an accord with Feyenoord over Gil as there would be a few players in return that could do a job here (outside of the obvious in Gimenez) in Geertruida, Wieffer and (to a lesser extent now due to injury) Hartman.

Conversely think it would be a great move for Gil's career to reignite again under Slot.

Liverpool have been talking to Slot and I have a feeling they could well go for him now links with Amorim have cooled. If Slot goes it could be a bad move for him tbh.

I think the problem with Gil is that for two seasons in a row he was sat on the bench for half of them then was sent on loan back to Spain. He has never been given a real chance to adapt to the PL, even to this day

Obviously the transfer was a complete failure, one can’t really deny that, but we have handled his development appallingly imo and never gave the lad a chance to adjust to the league. Yes there is a chance he might never have got used to the PL but barely playing for what now amounts to pretty much two whole seasons (two half seasons and the whole of this one) bar a few games here and there is just bad player management.

Yes I am aware that we supposedly wanted to try and loan him out for the second half of the current season but I can’t really blame him for not wanting to do that for a third season in a row. Really we should have found a PL club at the start of the season for him, the same thing we should have done for the previous two seasons. And if no PL team wanted him at least find a team in a more physical league for him or even the championship with a January recall clause.

I know obviously there are other factors and he is clearly a casualty of the constant changing of management but really from day one, if we thought he wasn’t ready to play any significant role we should have found a good club for him and loaned him out for one or two full seasons straight.

Fact is when we got him he looked like a very good prospect, he was very highly rated in Spain and even had 4 senior caps, but the club were such a mess we didn’t have time to develop and nurture young foreign talent. That makes sense but if we had been clever with loaning him he could have still been developing elsewhere which ether would have brought him to a level where we could use him or kept his value up if we eventually decided he wasn’t right. Instead he was pretty much just left to stagnate.

I’m sure clubs are still interested probably because of how highly rated he was before he moved and he’s still young but there is little doubt in my mind that he hasn’t developed as much as he could have done had we handled him better.

He might even have become that 1 on 1 dribbler everyone's crying out for.

Honestly I wasn't really saying you were criticising him. The fact is you are right that he will go down as blunder but I feel like it's only a blunder because how poorly we handled his development. He might never have adjusted to the physicality of the league but he might have still developed into a very good young player if he had played more regular minutes. As it is the most we will probably get for him is around 10-15 mil euros maybe but if he had been getting regular constant game time on loan then we might have got significantly more at the very least if not a useful part of the team.

Looking increasingly likely Liverpool are going for Slot. Supposedly he is now their no 1 candidate. With that in mind Im not sure Gil going to Feyenoord would be the best move for him.
