Not strictly Spurs related but I don't understand why they put some of the "highlight" games so early into the season. The obvious example this time being Chelsea vs. Man Utd on the first day of the season. Rightly or wrongly, that's one of the fixtures that will get a big global audience and therefore should serve as an advert for the PL. Therefore I find it daft to put a game like that on the opening day when it will more than likely be a bit of a shit game with both teams not having quite got up to speed and still "shaking the rust off" etc. etc. Surely the PL want their "big" games to be as entertaining as possible so that they win over new fans and make more money. Putting them so early in the season, even the very first round, is completely counter-productive from where I'm sitting.

Two reasons I could think of. Firstly, there's already so many factors that the randomness is reduced and we see similar patterns all the time e.g. Spurs very often away first day, away to Arsenal in Autumn, home to them in Spring. Adding more will increase this effect. Secondly, I'm not sure it'd be fair. The big clubs avoiding each other would have easier starts to the season and a better chance for momentum compared to an e.g. Leicester or Everton trying to chase them.

So the last couple of years we've been away at Newcastle to start the season. Against a well-drilled side hell-bent on defending and not losing while looking for a chance on the break. In short, a tough opponent to get early on when you haven't got into your stride.
This season they've lost their two best strikers and their top-quality manager. They've hired Steve Bruce, so you know it's going to be a shit-show, they'll be complete crap and he'll be gone when they're bottom of the league at Christmas. So who gets them to start the season? The goons.
