Manchester City join Tottenham in race for £15m ‘next Patrick Vieira’

Manchester City & Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Pedro Obiang linked with move from Sampdoria

Manchester City are the latest Premier League team to be linked with a move for Sampdoria starlet Pedro Obiang.

TalkSPORT claims that Citizens chief Roberto Mancini has been monitoring the player’s progress in Italy, and even made a personal check to watch the 20-year-old in Serie ‘A’ action after promotion from the second-tier last season.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas and Chelsea interim chief Rafa Benitez have also been linked with moves for the player, who has been compared to Patrick Vieira and Yaya Toure.

However, The Daily Mail reported at the end of November that teams in both Italy and Spain are also after the highly-rated midfielder, meaning a potential transfer battle in January.

Obiang joined Sampdoria as a youth team player in 2008, and made his senior debut for the Blucerchiati two years later.

Despite interest from around the continent, talkSPORT claims it’s Manchester City who are now favourites to sign the player, with the Premier League champions willing to meet the £15 million asking price.

Were Obiang to move to the Etihad Stadium, he’d play alongside compatriots David Silva and Javi Garcia, whilst striker Mario Balotelli also made the move from Italy to England.

Spurs, meanwhile, have a lack of Spanish players in their first-team squad, and the north London outfit have never really had a connection with the country.

The White Hart Lane outfit were also reported to be monitoring teammate Mauro Icardi, with a £2 million offer potentially enough to bring the player to Tottenham.

Thought that was quite a funny formulation.
