Reminded me a bit of the Isco links a few seasons back - always was unlikely and would have been awesome but ultimately not disappointed really as I always kinda knew it wouldn't happen. Great to see we tried for a player of that status though - we have come a long way as a club.

Hopefully this time next year we will actually be signing players like this.

Were we ever that close to Isco though? We may have been interested but I think we all knew it wasn’t going to happen. In this case we had agreed with both Juventus and Dybala and it looked like it was actually happening. That’s why this really hurts.

I'm totally gutted about this, as I think it would have been the real statement move for us we all crave, but I'm gonna try and pick out some potential positives:

-It seems we were stretching our wage bill to the limit to bring him in. This does risk dressing room issues, especially if he doesn't settle well and players paid half as much are doing the business in his place.
-There are no guarantees he would settle well here. He is considered a bit of a luxury player and it can be hard for those types to thrive in the fast pace of the PL. I'd back his talent to succeed, but the risks were there for a player that was looking like a huuuge outlay.
-We still have a lot in attack with the current batch and the additions of Lo Celso and Sessegnon, especially if Eriksen can be convinced to sign a new deal then we look very very strong IMO.

Don't get me wrong I hope we go for a real statement signing in future windows, as big clubs get on with these sort of issue, but there are some little silver linings to consider.

Slightly bummed we didn't get him but fucking hell, what a window. Ndombele, Clarke, Sess & GLC are excellent acquisitions. Keep hold of Toby & CE and we'll challenge.
