Luka Modric has opened up on 'exciting talks' with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on his yacht in Nice as the Russian tried to snare the midfield star from Tottenham in 2011.

if that’s not a clear case of tapping up then I don’t know what is.

Sad to read the reality of him not thinking we were an ambitious club back then. We often talk about (or hear pundits talk about) players thinking they need to leave to win. It’s tough to actually see that verbalized.

I've two problems with that article. He definitely confuses ambition with wealth and had no right to say they were more ambitious. Secondly he said he had a great season with us after he didn't get his move. That's bollox and I've never agreed with it. We were 10 points clear in 3rd and the team just capitulated, he should be ashamed of that season but the media bigged him up at the time as they knew he was in demand. He could have guaranteed we got third if he did his job properly.

Thing is that the whole ENIC ‘project’ has always been ambitious but unlike Abramovich, it was never about throwing money at the club to get things done overnight. There’s obviously a thread about ENIC so this isn’t the right place for debating the whole subject but I think that Modric is confusing chucking money around like it’s going out of fashion with building up a club slowly over a period time. That said, to a player: ambition means the ability for a club to recruit top players and pay top wages.

Looks like the warning Chelsea got over tapping up Ashley Cole worked an absolute treat.

If Abramovich genuinely wanted him so badly, why were the offers chelsea made so low?
IMO he made the approach and bids to disrupt the player's game. and Modric, bless him, naively played along with this.

Modric had let himself be so wound up by the end of it, we had to near give him away, so what should have been a really lucrative move for him, left him on lower wages and his game and confidence so low, he was thought one of RM's worst signings ever for the first year.

People make mistakes, and he was a young man, and Abramovich a clever manipulator, but Modric has had time to refect and still seems to be proud of his stupid actions. Lovely player though.

Where did this idea come from that Chelsea offered £40 million? That's bollocks they offered us maximum £22 million plus Kalou who they said they valued at £12 million then let go for nothing at the end of the season.
Modric is the role model for any player who thinks chelsea are their best option, there's better.

World's moved on and so should he. If that's the only snippet that's worth broadcasting as PR for the book in England, then there's not really much of interest in it. He's just another player who didn't tap into his full potential whilst at Spurs.
