Milos Veljkovic has been recalled from his loan at Middlesborough. Karanka spoke highly of him, and had already said he would like to keep him for the year. So it would appear that it is our doing. Could he be being recalled for 1st team action? He seems to me, from what I have seen of him, to be a good fit for a Pochettino midfield (as well as good cover at centre-back). Do you think he is ready for inclusion in the 1st team squad?

Just to be clear, even though I believe he may be ready to join Mason and Bentaleb as some of our midfield options, I still believe we need to buy in a more mature, more experienced dominant central midfielder in the mode of Schneiderlin to work alongside the younglings and help them along.

Instead of Rabiot I reckon. Unless there is a PL club interested in loaning him (not sure if that's allowed).

He hasn't been recalled, his loan spell just ended. Big difference.

Why is he being written off as a centre back then? Surely it would indicate that Kaboul or Chiriches are on their way out.

I'd say he was getting close to the first team at Spurs.

Does cast a doubt on Rabiot deal in my opinion, especially after what Karanka said last week.

He looked to be staying there according to them

Wasn't it last week that he was pulled out of their fixture mid week to feature in our u21 game? I thought I read something along those lines.

This kid really is good enough to be in the 25 man squad (Not that he needs to be registered), I'd love to see him in the 18 tonight, but doubt he's allowed, he can't do much worse than some of our backup midfielders have been doing.

He played in Boro's Third Round tie so he can't play for us in the FA Cup this season.

Head coach Karanka told the club's official website: "I'd like to thank Milos for his efforts while he was here and wish him all the best for the future. I'd also like to thank Tottenham for allowing him to come here for three months."

The loan was always scheduled to end now, there is no "drama" in these news. Also, the comment from Karanka is underwhelming isn't it. "Best of luck" is not exactly a very warm or fond farewell.

@ryantegan - thank you. Yeah, from looking a certainty the Rabiot deal now looks unlikely - Blanc said he wants to keep him.

@SlunkSoma - yeah, good call.

@Greenspur - he didn't get much playing time at the start of the loan. He recently got a chance and impressed, which is why Karanka wwanted to keep him.

@THFCSPURS19 - that's a technicality, really, the spirit of the return is that it is a recall. He had just broke into the Middlesborough team, he was receiving praise, Karanka wanted to keep him (Karanka is even a personal friend of Poch). So there seems little impediment to him staying there, which he would have been happy to do unless he were in our plans, unless he was either going to be included in our 1st team squad or placed on loan at a higher level than Middlesborough, and I'm not sure what the likelihood of that is. On the other hand, as said, he does seem like a good fit for the type of midfielder for Poch's system, and is more defensively equipped (being a centre-half originally) than either Bentaleb or Mason IMHO. So, afaiac it is appropriate to treat it as a recall and consider why.

@mil1lion - I don't think it is so much that he is being written off as a centre-half, just that he has good vision and passing abilities as well as ball winning abilities, making him useful further up the pitch. Doesn't mean he will never slot back into defence.

Doesnt change our need for a quality CM. All it does is not change the numbers, if we can get Capoue and Paulinho out with 1 coming in. If that cant happen, we'll probably loan him out again for game time. The loan ended. He was not recalled. The problem is, he is cup tied and i doubt he'll get much time in the Europa as we advance further into it. It's our fault we let them cup tie him.

They really fucked us on this loan. Barely played him at all despite playing well in his appearances because their "CB's were good and they were deep", cup tied him, loaned in Kalas who then started immediately like his 2nd day there. We got screwed, along with Milos.

@Everlasting Seconds - not really. As already answered in response to THFCSPURS19, he was actually full of praise for him and stated bluntly that he was very hopeful that the loan could be extended. The thanking on OS is pretty standard and little can be read into it - I would prefer to go with interview where he praises him and says he wants extension, myself :) I wasn't making a drama out of it, and don't think even the meeja were. Just saying that from a positive review and request for extension from their manager to his friend, Poch, to him returning to us, especially coinciding with Bentaleb's trip to Africa and the seeming collapse of the move for Rabiot, makes it seem more likely that we have positively wanted him to return (and therefore pertinent to ask why) rather than just Karanka not wanting to extend loan, and as said, his interview already makes it clear that that wasn't the case - amazingly I factored knowledge of that into my OP :)

@nightgoat - yeah, thanks for confirmation. I wasn't implying he was returning specifically for inclusion in tonight's game, thinking more of EPL and maybe Europa.

I didn't mean to suggest that you were causing any drama per se. I simply find this a bit more mundane piece of news than you do, both in general nature and in some of the details. Put it this way, if we had really started to recall loanees for strategic reasons, I think there are a few other names who would return as well/in stead of.

The Teeside Gazette, too, goes with the headline that Boro opt against extending loan and yet nowhere in the article does it actually say that they opted against it:

http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/...milos-veljkovic-set-return-tottenham-8445814?

What it does say, as I have said above, is that he waited two months to make a start but then got some regular appearances. I read prior to today, reports from Boro and they talked him up. His return leaves Boro short in central midfield. So, if he was starting to get game time, they were impressed with his input and Karanka had recently said he was hopeful of having the loan extended, even if the exact technicality is that the loan ended, it still seems to me, in spirit at least, that it is more of a recall than them kicking him outta the door to slink home with his tail between his legs.

@Everlasting Seconds - Was just reporting it, fella :I That said, I have always liked what I've seen of the lad, so could turn out to be a good move :) If you mean Carroll, my fandom of little Tommy drawfes any fandom I may have about Veljkovic - check out the under21's thread. I've been virtually stalking Tommy Carroll ( el petit) for the last three years or so :)

Agreed, usually, but all the noise coming out of Boro was that they wanted to keep him if possible. So either we've blocked that because we want him around our first team, or because we're looking at a PL loan for him.

By all means, I like Veljkovic too. I'm not talking him down.

Very much doubt he'll be in the first team this year. If anything I expect to see him loaned out again once we've sorted out our midfield options in the transfer window.

He'll probably only stay if we pick up an injury or are unable to sign anybody at all.

He wasn't getting much playing time at Middlesbrough but is good enough to mean we can offload half our midfielders? Some people are living in a fantasy world regarding our youth players. After decades of no hit rate, we're suddenly going to be able to get rid of big money players without replacing. He might be good in future, he might not. This idea that selling numerous players and recalling young/youngish loan players and feeling that's progression baffles me.
