Let's say by some miracle Ajax settle for the same transfer fee as Davinson, around £42 million. Raiola would then want paying, perhaps as much as £15-20 million judging by his Pogba cut, and I'm sure Ajax would insist we paid that cash. So the total deal rises to around £60m.

Let's say Levy agrees. De Ligt is potentially the best ball playing CB in the world but, as a pure defender, Jan, Toby and Davinson are all better at this stage. So de Ligt spends the next 2-3 seasons learning his defensive trade with us, making some John Stones-style errors. But that's OK because he's the CB of our future, for the next ten seasons, yeah?

I'd like to believet that. But Raiola's MO is to move his players every couple of seasons.

So, I'll be thrilled if someone produces evidence that Raiola is not de Ligt's agent. But if he is, any deal is now a much expensive and complicated prospect.

I thought I had read a while back that Raiola was hired by Ajax to negotiate the transfers and wouldn't actually be the players full time agent. I don't have time to go skim through all the articles but I remember seeing that somewhere. Could have been complete bullshit but who knows.

I’ve accepted the loss of Toby some while back; I know little of De Ligt other than what I’ve read on here. However, the fact he’s played with Sanchez and the suggestions he’s years beyond his biological age as a centre back equates to me being in huge favour of his signature. Add Grealish and Martial and I’d consider this to be the best window ever. Ok, arguably I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one...

I think the scenario that Ajax hired Raiola is less likely than the scenario that de Ligt hired him.

But even if that is the case, Mino Raiola is not a man who works for free.

Given Ajax got £42 million out of Levy last summer for Davinson, a player I rate very highly but who was not coveted by the likes of Man Shitty, Juventus,, Bayern & Barca, I can only imagine the price for de Ligt is sky high once Raiola's cut is taken into consideration.

Yeah, I just have a hard time seeing that anyone would actually go over 50mil for the kid. No one bar Liverpool has ever spent more than that on a CB. Why would they do that on De Ligt when you could go get a more proven player for less or the same amount of money? I just can't see it.

Agree with all of this yanno. And thanks for the research on the topic.

The likes of Raiola really are the parasitical scourge of the modern game.

We’ve heard from Herc and the like that we’re willing to pay top salaries (excl Oil City and ManUSA) which is great but I have a feeling that Levy refuses to deal with Raiola and his ilk which fundamentally puts us at a further disadvantage to some other clubs who are less principled in their dealings (Chelski and Liverlol). I suspect Levy won’t want to set a precedent by paying that level of agent fees to that type of agent.

I’m inferring all of the above of course but if it’s right, I have to admire him but also feel it puts us back in the ‘best of the rest’ in terms of pecking order for the top players. It’s a hard journey reaching the top in a sustainable, self-funded way ☹️

what do you mean? Barcelona was interested in Sanchez and he turned them down because it wasnt guaranteed first team playing time. He had other suitors, we did what we needed to in order to get the deal done.

I think it would be more sensible to go for Pavard as Alderweirelds replacement this summer and to earmark De Ligt for a move in 1-2 years time when he's proven himself a little more, physically developed further and demonstrated he wasn't a flash in the pan.

De Ligt would be a great Jan replacement based on his current age, technical ability and who he plays for at the moment

Foyth will fill that role surely?

I can't imagine us spending 40m or so on Pavard this summer and then another 50m+ for another CB next summer when Vertonghen will still be playing and we have Foyth waiting in the wings.

For what it's worth I'm pretty sure De Ligt has his *standatd* agent who's not Raiola, yet he (and Kluivert) hired him too to make the transfer happen, as his well connected and shit. He's like the middleman between the agent and the club. So yes, he wants shitloads of money for nothing.

Jan will be 32 next year. Hard to say how many years he's got left at the top.

Also if we continue to play 4 at the back like we reverted to towards the end of the season there could be no need to replace Toby this summer. We could be looking at a Vertonghen, Sanchez, Foyth, Carter-Vickers combo with no Pavard or De Ligt in mind for a move :s

Take Jan out of the equation and we are relying on inexperience

You do realise £30million is a fuckton of money...

£30m these days is a Janssen, Carter-Vickers & Onomah sale away.

It's still a lot of money but balancing the books on such an outlay isn't as difficult as it was a few years ago.

I wonder what kind of fee we could get for Nkoudou now as well

Or Grealish (ish).

Would people be happy with one less signing?

I'm pretty sure that was when he chose Ajax, not us?

We were at about 40 million net spend for last season.

every season we will know what we can afford to net spend, but taking 30m away for a player that Poch wants out because of whatever happened, means 30m less net next season. if we don't sell him this season we will not only be 30m out of pocket, but the amount that whoever we have in line to replace him in difference in wages. if his replacement is on 50k a week that's another 1.3m, then it could be a case of several top teams bidding on him. how would you really feel if he went to Arsenal?
