Spurs' wonderkid Marcus Edwards has attitude and mentality questioned as Norwich loan cut short

Matt Law, football news correspondent

Marcus Edwards, the Tottenham Hotspur youngster compared to Lionel Messi by manager Mauricio Pochettino, is in line for a lecture on his time-keeping and general attitude after his loan spell at Norwich City was cut short.

The 19-year-old returned to Spurs this week, having played only six minutes for Championship club Norwich after joining on loan in January.Edwards was meant to stay with the Canaries until the end of the season, but both clubs confirmed that he had returned to Tottenham due to ‘personal reasons’.

Telegraph Sport understands a number of issues contributed to Edwards’ disappointing spell at Norwich, including his poor time-keeping.It is believed he failed to arrive on time for a single training session and was also late for team meetings, much to the bewilderment of Norwich’s senior professionals. His attitude and failure to engage with the rest of Norwich’s squad surprised the other players, although sources at Tottenham point out that Edwards has an introverted personality that can be misunderstood.
Edwards was on the substitutes’ bench for Norwich’s victory over Aston Villa, but he once again failed to get on to the pitch. There became a sense that the loan had become a waste of time for all parties and it was terminated ahead of the Canaries’ draw with Sunderland.

Tottenham are set to waive any remaining fees due to them from Norwich as part of the loan, as the relationship between the two clubs remains strong.

It was in 2016, ahead of handing him his senior debut in the EFL Cup against Gillingham, that Pochettino compared Edwards to Messi by saying: “His qualities? It's only looks, his body and the way that he plays, remind a little bit from the beginning of Messi. He’s small, he’s left-footed.” Encouraged to choose a different player to compare Edwards to by the concerned head of communications, Pochettino added: “Ok, remember a little bit (Erik) Lamela when he was at River Plate. When he was 14, 15 years old, there are a lot of videos on YouTube that you can see, that he took the ball, didn't give a pass and shot straight away.
“He [Edwards] is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player but now it's how he builds his future, that's very important. And it's our responsibility to tell him.”

But in his book, Brave New World, Pochettino admitted the Messi comparison had been a mistake and revealed some of the problems surrounding Edwards.
He wrote: “Sometimes I wonder whether it was was to liken him(Edwards) to Messi. He was only 17. At that age, Messi was making his debut for a Barcelona side featuring Ronaldinho.

“They're from different families, backgrounds and cultures. One of them thinks like an Argentinian and the other like an Englishman. Marcus is still in the process of adapting to the rigours or being a professional, which require you to act and think differently, be disciplined and make sacrifices. “He has authority and behavioural problems, and we have to look at the bigger picture to find out the root cause. There was a time when it would have been seen as impossible for him to play professionally, let alone make it in the Premier League.“Our challenge is to get him to accept the pathway we've laid out for him, and it's our responsibility to make sure he behaves himself when he trains with the first team (with all the rules and obligations this involves). He has no shortage of talent, but there are gaps to be filled: he has to learn to score ugly, run more and be committed.”

Well, that was not a ringing endorsement...

Not turning up for training and meetings on time is not a good signal to make to any employer.

Shades of John Bostock here. He was sent back early from loans at Brentford and Sheffield Wed. If it’s true which it prob is as Matt Law appears well connected at Spurs, Marcus is on the same track as Ravel Morrison and Berahino. Top teams these days are not willing to carry a maverick type of player. If Ginola has been at Spurs when Poch arrived he wouldn’t have lasted long.

To be honest he sounds like a bit of an ungrateful twat. Quite the opposite of the Poch mentality.

He's probably a bit of a victim of his own talent. Having smoke blown up his arse from a very young age and being compared to Messi has probably given him a (false) sense of entitlement and as a result he doesn't feel like he needs to put in the graft. He obviously doesn't lack ability and it would be a massive shame for his talent to go to waste, but it seems he's running out of chances.

Let's not get carried away, many talented academy players have had bad loans that proved to be beneficial in the end. Look no further than Kane or Mason. That report sounds really bad but hopefully he'll have taken some lessons away from the experience. The fact that he was given a debut and Farke said he was on the cusp of being more involved would seem to suggest that he had.

Unfortunately it was just never really on the cards that the Norwich loan would work out. He arrived (carrying an injury) at the same time as a number of other attacking signings, and by the time he was fit and had "grown up" enough to warrant consideration Norwich didn't have anything to play for. Obviously under those circumstances any manager would prefer to blood the new permanent signings who will have a role to play next season rather than develop another club's prospect.

Given how crowded the AM positions are here at Spurs I think it'll be in his best interest to get a season-long loan in the Championship next season. Assuming he is able to maintain a professional attitude, with a full preseason he should be able to work his way into the manager's reckoning given the natural ability he has. That would be a much better opportunity to get the playing time he needs rather than trying to force his way into a side that ultimately had no real use for him three-fourths of the way through the season.

That Messi comment is even getting taken out of context these days though.

He heavily qualified it with this at the time:

"He is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player. But now it's how he builds his future, that's very important. And it's our responsibility to tell him."

Unfortunately Marcus has been under the microscope from an early age and that's a hell of a lot of pressure to deal with.

I guess at the time Poch felt he could deal with it and just needed an extra aspirational push to reach his 'true' potential.

That still might be the case but I think that many Spurs fans, having been spoiled by the success of Harry, are/were now waiting for their own homegrown teenage wonderkid etc...

Anyway, hope this just puts more fire in his belly. The opportunity is still there.

He's great, but it's so rare to have young English talent with that absolute determination to make it to the top and work at the level to do it. It might be that a few look at him and realise that they can't reach the same levels in terms of sheer effort.

Disagree. Why can’t they?

Anyone can make the same level of effort as Kane has. You could, I could, anyone could.

If Edwards has the talent, which many people claim he does, it is simply now about focus, hard work and sacrifice.

If he can’t focus because of distractions (the wrong sort of friends, computer games, whatever) then he should remove those distractions from his life.

If he can’t stick to a strict diet or likes eating McDonalds, then stop eating shit, learn how to cook or get a chef to cook his meals.

If he isn’t getting enough sleep, work on techniques that can help him rest, or seek help from the club.

I have no idea If Edwards has issues with any of the above but if any kid at Spurs wants a role model they just need to look at Kane.

Just Frank Lampard, Kane has squeezed every single ounce out of his talent (which was deemed fairly average by many at a young age) by being as professional as possible in absolutely every area of his life, listening to people who want to help him and working his arse off.

To make it at the very top you have to really, really want to make it there. At the expense of everything else. Kane does, does Edwards?

We’ll see...

Son has played 11 more and scored 6 more than martial. Dont think we can fit both in the team. Martial will want to start

I think it was telling reading poch’s book when he says there was a time when he wouldn’t have been seen as being able to make it as a footballer.

Now if that doesn’t ring alarm bells to some people on here it should do.

All what Matt Law is saying is correct. Sometimes when we bang on about putting him on bench etc few months ago, you arenow aware why. Imho he is going the very wrong way.

If that is true then I can’t imagine Pochettino will let him anywhere near the side, even in pre season. Massively disappointing to read.
