Odd he had shown ability out there from the videos I've seen, albeit with little end product especially in front of goal. Was looking a good loan until recently.

Hope for resurrection 'mini-Messi': "You do not see such a player in the Netherlands much"

Marcus Edwards is seen in England as a super talent, but has not been able to impress much on Excelsior. Football followers in the Rotterdam region are convinced of the qualities of the British 'mini-Messi'.

RTV Rijnmond- journalist Sinclair Bischop tells De Volkskrant that the Tottenham Hotspur mercenary is struggling with homesickness and that the Kralingers are dissatisfied with his return. Bishop, however, sees potential in the small dribbler. "Have already called that Martin van Geel as technical director of Feyenoord should do business with Tottenham fast," says the journalist. "Edwards can do so much with a ball on the square meter, you do not see a lot like that in the Netherlands."

Bishop hopes that Edwards after his difficult start at Excelsior will still release his promise, but fears that his closed, introverted character will get in the way.

"As a footballer, you also have to be able to develop outside the field, and I add my question to him."

At Excelsior they have difficulty getting height from the introvert Englishman. According to Bischop it is in and around the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium an open secret that he suffers from homesickness. 'His father has now come over again, then you immediately notice that he is better in his skin. He also goes his own way. We have not been able to interview him yet. FOX Sports also wanted to talk to him, but that was not recommended by the club because he finds interviews very difficult. '

So Edwards is still a big mystery: how good is he really? Bishop is convinced that he has the potential to become a phenomenon. The journalist points to Dries Mertens in his time at AGOVV. "With him, it also took a long time before he broke through. But you saw early on that he had something special. ' Although Bishop wonders whether Edwards has the good character to reach the top. 'As a footballer you also have to be able to develop outside the field. I ask my question about that. '

i often see people referring to edwards as a billy big bollocks but those who have actually worked with him all seem to suggest that he's just really quiet. not sure what will happen with him in january if he's still not playing, i don't think another loan would be the answer so would guess it's either stay there or come back and play in the u23s.

This does beg the question of would he actually leave us. In the past I assumed he would want to go because of the lack of football. But from many reports it sounds like he might actually not want to leave for fear of not settling in. I am starting to worry about him, he clearly has the talent but he doesn’t seem to have he mental fortitude to succeed.

Shame really as he is clearly talented. I do remember though Souness leaving us because he was homesick and also Best left after a couple of days when first joining ManU. These were though younger and went to Spurs from other parts of the UK whereas Edwards has been in and around Spurs for some time. Still maybe he will come back and settle down realising that the setup at Spurs is better than elsewhere

Why is it that so many players from other nations are able to come to England at such a young age and seemingly just get on with it but so many English players can't hack being abroad? I know recently that trend seems to be shifting but I do find it odd.

Anyway as everyone here knows Edwards has the talent just seems like he's lacking the mentality. Not something that can be coached easily.

Seems destined to waste his prodigious talent

I reckon if he was the bench for us and was given 10-20 mins every game, he'd do quite well.

Kane's loans weren't raging successes... there's no telling which route is best.

Clearly talented
obviously has issues.
Get him back
under Pochettino's close supervision
for next season
for last chance.

Crikes, not this myth again. Souness was homesick as a very young man and once took off home to Edinburgh. He was (stupidly) sold to Middlesbrough much later.

Do they?

We remember those that make it and forget those that don't.

Language, first and foremost. How many young players would come to England with virtually zero English comprehension?

Imagine yourself as a late teen, being sent to a new country to work where most of the language interaction was utterly alien to you, huge barrier, gaining the coaches trust must become much more difficult and team mates.

got 25 mins off the bench today, his first appearance for six weeks or so. came on at 0-2, which soon became 0-3, not that the goal had anything to do with him. thought he was bright as usual at least trying to make something happen for a flat team, had a couple of efforts which went narrowly past the post - which you can see here. had some other little bits of nice play, he really just needs one of these to shots to roll for him. i still have faith that it will click for him in the future, at which point he will be the kind of player that teams are clamouring for.

Wow those were two great efforts. I can't believe he hasn't had the luck to hit the back of the net yet this season..

Finding it hard to imagine he'll have any sort of impact for us, ever.
Difficult to say - I remember seeing Kane coming on as a sub for Leicester when on loan and thinking he wouldn't even make it as a lower league player!
