Some weeks ago... The article writes off the loan system by pointing to a player who has since emerged into our first team... A "case study" on Ryan Mason, completely ignoring the fact that his progress has been severly hampered by injuries.

I like the article. The main point for me is that there are certain types of player who benefit from the loan system and certain sypes of player who don't. It might be best to keep small technical players away from most lower league clubs.

The problem for Spurs has been the huge senior squad size which hasn't given young talents any game time. With a smaller squad you can give more time to youth players and ease them into the first team.

The article makes a very valid point. You need to train the way and at the level you intend to play. The hardest thing in any field is to unlearn bad habits. The best way of dealing with that is not to pick them up in the first place.

Compare the number of players who come through from the lower leagues with the ones who start out at good clubs and make the grade. If you want to be the best you should learn from the best.

You need to do your research... you list Ajax and Vertonghen as a beacon of keeping players developing at a club and yet pick a player sent out on loan to develop...

Not all lower league teams play hoofball. We sent our players out generally to clubs who like to play football (Swindon, Bournemouth etc) saying all clubs in the lower leagues play on shit pitches and just lump the ball forwards suggests you don't really watch much football outside the premier league and I think you admitted that in your opening gambit. If you are going to make an argument at least do some research and know the facts.

One of the best youth teams in the world ply their trade in the lower leagues of spain... namely Barca's b team. Players are blooded and developed in these teams and are then brought back into the main team when they are ready. If you want a sign of it working google a list of ex Barca b players...

So many prem players had successful loans when they were kids:

Defoe - Bournemouth
Lampard - Swansea City
Ferdinand - Bournemouth
Wilshere - Bolton (hes a twat but point stands)
Michael Carrick - (Swindon and Birmingham)
John Terry - Nottingham Forest
David Beckham - Preston

Even the great Andreae Pirlo was loaned out early in his career.... Seriously that was maybe 2 minutes worth of thinking to come up with a small list. Loaning works, it gives players game time they cant get with the first team and helps them develop in a competitive dressing room. Try watching lower leagues and watching how successful teams transition some of their top talent.

Loans work but it is loaning players at the right time and viewing it in a development plan for a player.
