Shyster =

What's wrong with that? It's not racist or something as far as I know.

It's a well known to be a loaded anti-semitic word. Just because it doesn't technically say so in the dictionary doesn't make it not true, same reason a person would argue that 'well niggardly just means ungenerous with money, theres no problem there if i use it to describe a person who just so happens to be black'.

I had no idea "shyster" could be considered anti-semitic.

Apologies regardless, I certainly didn't intend any offence.

Don't worry, i was worried that it this thread was going to derail into a tricky and nuanced conversation around race and how hurtful words become part of parlance without deliberate intent to offend but Sir Henry cleared it all up and it turned out we were just being big babies.

I've never heard any suggestion of it being anti-semitic at all. Having googled it to check it sounds like this idea that it's anti-semitic stems entirely from the fact that it is mostly used to refer to lawyers and stereotypically "lawyers are all jewish" or whatever, but it's clutching at straws massively to say the word shyster is anti-semitic. If anything, saying that the word is anti-semitic is anti-semitic in itself, because it relies on the stereotype that lawyers are jewish, but that's got nothing to do with the word shyster.

And lots of people disagree with you, but if you feel so strongly that you want to keep arguing for it on the internet then you carry on. The rest of the thread has moved on, Gassin apologised for not knowing which he didn't have to do but we all learned and grew a bit. But it's clearly a very important word to you so crack on using it as much as you like then you can enjoy explaining to any Jewish person who happens to be offended why they are wrong and it's their fault for doing so. Im moving on so for the sake of this thread going any further off topic i think its agree to disagree and move on.

Hang on, so the person who for no reason at all started falsely accusing people of being anti-semitic based on a convoluted faux-etymology is now patronisingly accusing me of derailing the thread in a fit of outrage when called out on it  Ironic would be an understatement

Anyway, I'll leave it at that so as not to compound the problem.

I'd rather we were crap under him in the 90's than not be here at all today if not for him during the 90's.

I was nearly £20k in debt in my 20's - at some point I had to sort it out and spent a year living like a homeless person. It was miserable, I don't think my social life ever really recovered, 10 years later people still think I don't want to go out anymore lol. But I'm far better off for it now.
Much like living off scraps in the 90's.

It’s considered anti Semitic when directed towards a Jew....pretty sure Ken Bates got in shit for calling Abramovic that.
It’s a bit like the adjective ‘greasy’...salesmen and estate agents etc can be described as greasy, but it takes a different meaning when it’s aimed at a Jew.
