Well he points to 'players we want to keep ' so if we get a megabucks offer we could still choose to sell and he wouldn't be breaking his word.

That was always the case i think.

I don't think he'll be selling Kane tho, megabucks from RM or not. I really can't see it.

No, neither do i. But my point is that he could sell say, Rose, for silly money and say he was sold because the club chose to sell him. And so this statement doesn't really tell us much.

Anyone under contract who wants to stay will stay, no doubt.

Statements like this always make it seem inevitable that they will be for sale, just not now.

Id rather us make noises about signing players that can progress us and keep us in the top four.

We (by which I mean a lot of us) have a bit of a chip on our shoulder about how the media describes us.

Firstly - who cares? They'll write what they feel like to sell their product. They do the same to every club - there is no bias against us.

Secondly - in the same period you've outlined, both Arsenal and Liverpool have spent way more money than us, and both have won more major honours than we have. Until either or both of those things change, the media won't change its tune.

Liverpool won the league cup once during that period and so did we.

Arsenal has won 3 FA cups but that kind of selling is unsustainable and it really is showing now as they slip further behind City, Chelsea, United, us and Liverpool. Consider that they have not seriously threatened for the prem title in the last 10 years.

Keeping our best players is going to be more important than buying players.

Fair point on Liverpool. Though if you go back to the previous decade they won much more, compared to us.

I actually love how we are progressing recently, and where we are as a club - and I'd rather this than being Arsenal or Liverpool. Was just trying to offer a justification as to why the media talk about us the way they do.

I guess it depends on who was sold.

If he sold Danny Ross, it would be far less of an outcry than selling Kane, Alli, Son, Toby and a few others.

So you are right, his statement has no really definitive and can be read from various angles.

Because the media is in a weird guilt love with Liverpool.

Their lack of success and eagerness to sell the Crown Jewels despite such vastly greater commercial heft is far more noteworthy. They have foreign owners too, tabloids should love that.

Yet they don’t. They overplay their successes and downplay their failures while having a pop at us instead. It’s not a chip any more than it’s painfully obvious. We're 'renowned' because they maintain the same line regardless of facts.

You’re right in that it is what it is. I don’t think us winning the league would change the narrative though, so I don’t think success comes into it

For someone who rarely speaks in public, especially about player trading, this is definitely a statement.

Maybe he's fed up of hearing twaddle in the media about how our players will leave if we don't win a trophy and wanted to have his say.

But as a footnote, 'players we want to keep' will not include those who have their heads turned &/or become disruptive.

I agree. I'd also add that I think Kane genuinely doesn't want to leave us. Another potential benefit of homegrown talent.

I think Harry wanting to stay will largely depend on us keeping the nucleus of the team that surrounds him. If, for example, we let Alli, Toby, Son etc go, (not saying we will of course), then I think he would begin to lose faith in us meeting his long term ambitions.
