Perhaps he needs to have total control of budget, etc and doesn't trust others with the money?!

It was no secret Mourinho wanted Maguire and Alderweireld but Woodward was having none of it. Why? Probably because he was unwilling to spend anymore after Mourinho had already spent a fair whack. Whilst they have spent a ton of cash and got no where with it, they still have limitations and I guess Woodward would be worried a DOF may go overboard.

I'm not saying he has to give a DoF a completely free reign and a blank cheque every transfer window. Obviously as the Chairman/Chief Exec or whatever he is, he would ultimately have the final say on what the budget was and what they were willing to spend on an individual player etc. They would still report to him.

To use the CIO example again, I assume they have someone who knows a thing or two about IT in charge of their systems rather than Woodward doing it all himself, but he'll still keep an eye on how much the CIO etc. are spending and set their budgets and stuff because they'll still report to him. He doesn't just turn up to work one day and find out that they've spent 100m on a new computer system does he? So why wouldn't it be the same with a DoF?

This is one thing I don't understand about Woodward. He's clearly a very talented/able businessman and not an idiot, so when he's so obviously just not cut out for this DoF type role, why does he still insist on doing it? Surely he's smart enough to know when to delegate some of the more technical responsibility to an expert? It's like a Chief Executive insisting that they also do the CIO role as well even though they don't know the first thing about computers. I just find it odd that you can be so good at something but at the same time have this massive flaw that it clear and obvious to everyone except yourself.

It's called pride.

Quite the leveller...

Hope you don't regret that! Brave Manchester United fan gets Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's face in a wheel tattooed on his leg to pay tribute to Champions League win over PSG
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will always remain at the wheel for one Man United fan
  • Tor Henrik Stensland posted a picture of his new Solskjaer tattoo on Twitter
  • The United fan said he would get the tattoo if the Red Devils beat PSG
  • The tattoo consists of the United manager with his face in a ship's wheel

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Man Utd boss will get financial backing to bring success back to Man Utd - Ed Woodward - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48295216

Thought Spurs were the perfect example that it's who you buy...not how much you spend. Give Ole millions, but it's no guarantee he buys quality and success. Will these morons never learn ? (hopefully not for many a year :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)

Juicy goal bonuses ..
.

Clashed? I smell bullshit. It’s more spin to portray Sanchez and Pogba as the bad guys in a bid to push them out. But we have your back guys. You stay there and run those contracts down, don’t let them bully you into leaving. And make sure Jones and Ashley Young stay with you!!

In that article OGS talks about the fact that it'll take a long time for Utd to be challenging again, etc.

If you're at one of the biggest clubs in world football, with a history of success, that sort of talk doesn't sit right with me.

I know he's trying to play down expectations, but there's a real danger that the club starts to expect second-best, or even mediocrity.

There should be a hunger and desperation to be back at the top again, regardless of how difficult it will be to get there.

Not that I'm disappointed as they're our rivals, but I feel it's symptomatic of the rot that has set in.

PS Long may it continue

Marcelo Bielsa to Manchester United…
Alright, if no one is calling this (yet to read morning mailbox), I’m calling it first. Marcelo Bielsa is available (likely) after his excellent (but atypical of his sides, tired) Leeds lost the playoffs. The man is revered by the greatest of football minds. Believes in principles that center on connecting with supporters, playing attractive football, and giving it all the entire game. The man can begin the healing process that United are direly in need of. Yet, would Woodward have the guts to radically sack Ole and hire Biesla? Would be inspired (like Leeds did), but won’t happen (as Biesla cant be used to get commercial deals). Just sticking my thoughts out here! What do United fans think?

He's being honest, it'll take ages to get United back to where they were.

I hate the implication you can simply buy 'success'....you can buy an extremely expensive and talented side but that's no guarantee.

Yeh but it’s hard to get success without money, it’s a combination of a clear plan and money combined normally.

Man City: good plan and money = success
Man United: no plan and money = Ed Woodward

When he got the job he started off by talking about the success and the history, but now he's just being realistic. It sounds like he's being managed behind the scenes.

I can understand what Ole is saying, I think next season their goal needs to be either 4th or winning the Europa League and try and keep the team as lean as possible.

Realistically who in their team would they want to keep.

De Gea
Dalot
Lindelof
Shaw
Rashford
Lingard
McTominay

So you have 7 players to build your team around assuming De Gea stays

Then there's a few who are on the maybe pile

Martial - questions on attitude
Fred - does he deserve a second season
Pogba - huge questions on attitude

So realistically they're not going to be able to sell all the players they want and bring in enough to fully compete. This summer should be about finding 4/5 great players, nobody world class or above and beyond, just a spine of quality players who you can develop, that's why the likes of Daniel James are great targets for them. Keep the squad as lean as possible don't buy anymore Sanchez, schweinsteigers, Matic types who are ageing and take up room. Fill the bench with youth and some of the current squad who you'd hope to move on the summer after. Aim for that top4/Europa and then that summer you can begin looking at the top class players knowing you have a good base and have had 2 summers to cut all the players you don't want.

If they go full guns blazing in this window they'll end up with players they can't get rid of again and will get further from competing again imo.

It seems like Woodward starts every transfer window by making a public statement talking about how much money they have and how willing they are to spend it  Talk about business 101 for christ's sake.

His mind has definitely been 'somewhere else' on a couple of occasions recently and I feel certain he'll have had enough. He doesn't want to be wasting this part of his career on watching Ole try to rebuild over the next 3/4 years when he could be signing for a huge trophy winning club.

My other doubt is whether Ole is really the man to trust with such a responsibility. To be suddenly given millions of pounds and told to 'name who you want' is no guarantee of having the ability to purchase the right people. He may well come to view this as a poisoned chalice in the months ahead. All my Utd supporting friends assume anyone (including Messi) would be willing to join their 'magnificent' club but that just ain't so anymore. Players are only too aware just how big the rebuilding task is at Old Trafford and the so called Theatre Of Dreams is all that the ground now holds....dreams ....and broken ones at that.

Also I think Pogba must go, his ego is far too much to have to handle together with everything else going on at Man Utd. His disruptive influence is there for all to see and he reminds me greatly of a certain gentleman named Balotelli.
We are also hearing strange stories about Martial, Ole wants him out but the Glazers want him to stay, the outcome of that one may well be a weather vane for future dealings.

In short, the club is currently in turmoil and many seasons away from producing a title challenging side. Their determination to sort out this mess and get back onto the right path will be better judged by who leaves rather than who comes in during this transfer window. They have a lot of baggage sitting in that dressing room or out on the golf course drawing massive wages.

Ole should still be interim manager and the board now talking to prospective long term new ones, their plans for the future and desired players to come in and make the change. Knee jerked and it's backfired....they responded to the fan's demands following a relatively easy winning streak but those fans are starting to voice their doubts now....(fickle things football supporters you know :sneaky:).
