Never understood why Benitez took the job. He must have known what he was in for.

He'd been waiting for a move back to England for years. His family stayed in this country when he was managing abroad.

Next Newcastle manager odds:

Garry Monk - 11/2
Eddie Howe - 7/1
Gennaro Gattuso - 10/1
Jose Mourinho - 12/1
Chris Hughton - 14/1
Patrick Viera - 16/1
Marcelo Bielsa - 20/1
David Moyes - 20/1
Arsene Wenger - 20/1

Any of those likely to be better than Rafa? Nah.

Gattuso or Wenger would've been hilarious though.

Eddie Howe could be one to watch there. He needs to go to a bigger club than Bournemouth at some point, but he's probably too smart to move to Newcastle now.

They are absolutely chuffed mate. Here are some examples from the thread Rafa gone.

DISGRACE! But utterly predictable.
---
Gary Monk's black and white army!

Fucking pathetic.
---
Arseholes.
---
The statement that club won’t be sold will probably follow in due course.
---
Gattuso or nowt. Let’s go down in style.
---
If we appoint Twattuso that’s me finished with the club for the time being.
---
7/2 to go down if you’re quick.
---
Owner renowned for fucking popular managers over fucks popular manager over.
Without any hyperbole, it is entirely possible that we will never have a better manager from this point on. Goodbye Rafa, thanks for everything. Can't wait to see what clown the FCB will dredge up to replace him. Roy Keane just left Forest, maybe he's up for a challenge?
---
Why would you not do everything in your power to keep a manager like rafa on board? Fucking stupid fat prick.

I know that my cousin has been expecting it, but is still crushed by it. Because it proves that it doesn't matter how good a manager they have, he will never be backed. Benitez has created a hero status on Tyneside to rival that of Keegan or Robson... because he "got" the city and its identity. He was on their side.

Newcastle genuinely see the complete removal of Ashley and his ownership as the only solution.

On the bright side, it's written Adrian Durham's drive time show for him.

Rafa has always fallen out with owners. He is very political and wants as much control as he can get.
I don’t get this ..what a great job he’s done......in the championship they had a 100m wage bill..beaten only by about 7 premier lge teams. They have a few decent players....I would expect Chris hughton to have kept them up.
Biggest club in Northumbria...won nothing for 64 years.

Er... the only other club of note I can think of in Northumbria is Berwick... And they play in the Scottish League.

So who is the biggest club in Northumbria if not them? Not really sure where you're going with that to be honest. Bit of a daft comment whichever way you look at it.

As for their wage bill - that only serves to demonstrate how badly run they are. Giving players lots of money doesn't necessarily mean they've got a good squad. Plenty of clubs have found that out the hard way. And with what most people consider to be a Championship-level squad, he's managed a top half finish and a mid-table finish despite all the off the field turmoil. He's done a great job with them IMO and they'll find it extremely hard to recruit someone better than him to take over.

Pardew, Mclaren, Carver....it's not hard to see why the fans are gutted, considering some of the coaches that they've had to put up with.

I tend to agree. He’s done a decent job there, but Eddie Howe has done a much better job at Bournemouth with fewer resources.

I’m not convinced that Rafa is such an elite manager tbh. Effective under certain circumstances, but probably not the best manager to get the best out of a middling club/squad like Newcastle.
