So what happened with their takeover then? Another false dawn, or are they still going to overtake us next season>

Spot on. If there's one thing nobody can accuse Newcastle fans of, it's being deluded ;)

TBF, I live in Newcastle, I know a LOT of Newcastle fans and Keegan rarely, if ever comes up in conversation. They are all pretty cynical to be honest.

I know, just couldn't resist the opportunity to have a little dig. Was just joking around (y) Most Newcastle fans I've met have been great. There was a lot of delusion during the "second coming" of the messiah though. Obviously as you say people don't really talk about it any more though. And to be honest, I think everyone would be pretty cynical if you'd been putting up with an owner like Ashley for all these years.

It doesn't even look particularly like the 1969 shirt other than the collar

And that blue sponsor is hideous. I know people constantly moan about us having a red sponsor but at least it's a fairly plain text logo rather than this monstrosity.

Remove that sponsor and that's an absolutely gorgeous kit - one of the best I can think of in the Prem for a while.

What a waste.

It’s been confirmed that Benitez will leave at the end of his contract. Shame

You're right - they did get quite optimistic when Keegan came back but I think that

That is true. Can't blame them too much though as the firstcriticismas special, if ultimately trophy less. Unfortunately it's rarely as good the second time, particularly when you have a Mike Ashley in charge. Whatever criticism one can level at DL, he has a plan beyond merely surviving in the premier league.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mark Hughes gets the job. Seems to be the only one on the merry go round that hasn't been in charge of Newcastle.

It doesn't take long in football for things to change. Only a few weeks ago, it looked like they were gonna be back in the big time with a mega money takeover. Now, seem no nearer getting rid of Ashley, and lose their beloved Benitez.

I expect this will be the final trigger for a lot of Geordies. A lot will stop going and they won't come back before Ashley finally sells.

That’s really bad Benitez going.

Ashley really is a poor owner!

Wonder who he will get to come in for the exciting job of keeping things ticking over. Steve Bruce?

Just remembered that David Moyes is available...

I think the best they could hope for if they go for an older manager is Puel.

That's them fucked then, for a team like Newcastle where clearly the manager is keeping it all together - for him to leave I fully expect them to go backwards now - can't emphasise enough the impact of Benitez leaving Newcastle will knock them for 6.

Ashley makes Levy seem like a spendthrift.

I suspect you may be right. Benitez was an unexpected lifeline for Ashley but it was absolutely vital that he keep him. I'm not a massive Benitez fan, but he's about as good a manager as they could possibly attract in their current situation and realy seems to have struck the right chord with the fans. Not doing even the bare minimum to keep him there might be the final nail in the coffin for Ashley.
