this i feel is quite a tough one, so would like to know what other people think. Is Jan Vertonghen becoming a bigger legend than our Ledley King?

This is simply not comparable ... Ledley was home grown and best CB we’ve ever had (well, in modern era). Loyal in a time when we were not competitive. Put his body on the line week in week out. Jan is a very good CB in top 5 in the league. A better question would be is Harry Kane going to be as big a legend as Ledley (he probably already is but needs that career one club longevity). For me Ledley is up there with the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Danny Blanchflower.

I'm not down with putting one thing above the other, like it's some empirical, quantifiable thing. They are both legends of Tottenham, in their own unique ways.

This. I remember seeing him on some footy show and they said whats his proudest achievement and he said winning the carling cup. Imagine that? Poor fucker gave us everything and all we gave him was a carling cup yet he still loved us for it.

In his own way as a foreign player coming in I think that JV can be considered a legend when he's done (depending on how it's all handled of course). It's not really comparable to a homegrown one-club man though is it?

Jan is a legend now. He's been here 6 years, is a consummate footballer, and done it all with quiet integrity. He is up there.

We call players who were here barely a year and achieved less, legends.

Love super-Jan. HIs signing has been part of the core of our recent development

BUT

It's Ledley King you'r comparing him too. It's been done to death but without that knee injury he could well have been the most valuable defender of his generation. The fact that he kept coming back and playing to the standard that he did completes his legendary status.

thats my take on it

I don’t think there is any need for the WTF sticker. I am just asking people’s opinion. I didn’t say he was, but I heard it being talked about with other friends I know and wanted to just get peoples take on it.

Goes to show how far onions can differ. I don't think he comes close to either.

Fuck it, I'll own up. I voted yes :D

And (not a criticism) I do wonder if he'd have been a one club man if he didn't suffer that injury. I guess we'll never know.

It's a fair point. But now he was, so..

King all day long. Was imperious on one knee and no training in the week prior. Just imagine him with two good knees and training under his belt. Also met him and he was one of the nicest blokes. Proper gent.

Vertonghen is one of the best CBs we have ever had though, and is only second to Rose in longevity at the club within the current squad. Should be captain in my opinion. If we can win a trophy or two with him, then he'll be up there undoubtedly.

I chose Jan is because he’s been with us for 7-8 years and plays the same position as Ledley.

And another thing we’ll never know is if Jan would have stayed with us as long as he has had we been a bit shitter & not regularly provided Champions League football ??‍♂️

Jan is one of our best ever, certainly in the PL era, but Ledley was like a tougher, more robust Jan with pace. I’d say Ledley had all the best qualities of our three current centre backs with none of the flaws.

He came back and marked out the best striker in the country in the league cup final with no training having played only four league games all season.

Apples and oranges. Both of them are among the best CBs we've had in our history, there's no doubt about that, but as others have said, Ledley came through the academy and played his whole career for us even though for most of his career we were a crap team or at best a fairly mediocre one. Even if for arguments sake you say that Vertonghen is a better player than King was, he can still never be more of a legend than Ledley regardless of what he does, but that's not really Jan's fault or anything, it's just the way it is.

Legend gets thrown about far too easy. Not nearly the amount of legends out there, that people say there are imo. Lots of greats, but not legends. But I guess it depends on what you think creates a legend.
No is my short answer.
