So will there be two different interpretations of the 'handball' law?

One for the PL and one for the CL?

For the record, the CL handball law is an utter farce!!

There's only one handling law. And the Champions League hasn't even been played with the new laws, so I'm not sure what the "CL handball law" is.

The situations that occurred and led to penalties in our quarter final (vs City) and final would never have occurred in the PL.

The rules are interpreted differently.

I like the change where a goal kick doesn't have to leave the box for a player to play it.

Yeah the old rule was surely a remnant from before the back pass rule, it hasn't been necessary since then.

What about the six second rule for the keeper holding the ball?? Came in with a fanfare and promptly ignored by the officials particularly in Europe.

It's still in there and will continue to be ignored.

Nothing about shirt pulling or a player wrapping his arms round another in the box preventing him scoring then?? Oh that's ok then. Seems to be an acceptable offence these days.

They said they were clamping down on that a couple of seasons ago (I think during the summer after Leicester won the title) but then one ref actually applied the rules and gave loads of cards out, which resulted in idiots like Shearer absolutely panning him on tele. Rather than back him up, the other refs etc. did nothing and just hung the guy out to dry, so naturally all the refs just decided it wasn't worth enforcing the rules and it was easier to just let it slide like they've always done.

That's the trouble with all these things, when you first introduce them it'll be chaos for a couple of weeks, but as long as you stay consistent and stand by it, eventualy the clubs/players cotton on to the fact that you're serious about it and will stop doing it. Same goes for booking players when they crowd the referee - if they actually enforced the rules fully for a couple of weeks, everyone would stop doing it, but because they never enforce it it just becomes a farce.

To give him some credit as he always (often legitimately) gets bashed here, it was Mike Dean who tried to apply the rules but nobody else followed the brief and as you say it petered out quickly once the pundits started bashing him. Idiots.

Couldn't remember which ref it was. Cheers,

As for hand ball...
I’m in a meeting for the new season and I can tell you that the Sissoko Hand Ball will always be a hand ball in Europe next season.

Essentially any arm at shoulder height (there abouts) will be handball.

Interestingly, any hand contact as you slide (other than obviously deliberate) so if it hits your hand as your on the floor, will not be.

Either way this is different to the UK hand ball law.

As @cwy21 has pointed out, it's funny that the UK (PL at least) insist on a different interpretation of the rule when four of the eight members of the rule-making body are from the Home Nations.

Don't get me wrong, I think the PL's interpretation is better. But why can't they make the rest follow suit when they control half the IFAB board?

Disagree slightly. The Champions League was being played under the Laws of the Game, but with UEFA interpretation which made it different to what you saw in the PL game to game . That interpretation then essentially became the backbone for this year's changes to the Laws of the Game.

I think that the PL has a clear idea of how the game should be refereed, which is demonstrably different to how the game is refereed on the continent.

Just watched The Debate on Sky Sports, Var special with the head of Var Neil Swarbrick. I thought it was actually quite interesting and balanced out.

Nice to hear the officials explaining what's happening.

Is there a new rule change for penalties where you can't score from a rebound or have I dreamt that?

Also, there's a new rule with the around the ball hitting the ref. Today the ref basically gave the ball back to Villa after Grealish's pass hit him. Was that the correct ruling and what happens if it hits the ref after a 50-50 challenge, or the ball was clearly going to an opposition player?

@cwy21

VAR only gets involved for encroachment if a player who entered before the PK was the player who got to the ball after the save/miss. That's what happened here.

As for the ball hitting the ref, the law states that a dropped ball should happen if the ball hitting the ref causes a change of possession, a goal, or starts a promising attack. All dropped balls outside of the penalty area will go to the team that last touched the ball before the ball hit the ref or play was stopped (for an injury, etc.)

The ball hitting the ref after a 50-50 challenge is difficult to answer and it isn't very clear to me in the laws. Did it cause a change in possession? Probably not. However, anytime the ball touches the ref and it starts an attack, expect to see play stopped and restarted with a dropped ball.

This season, particularly the first month or so, is going to be a complete nightmare with regards to VAR. There’s going to be lots of Man City CL ‘celebrate like mental for 3 minutes cos you thought you won only to find out it’s been disallowed’ moments. It’s gonna be shit.
That ain't shit. That is pure drama. Depends which side of the decision you are on, but going from feeling utterly deflated to losing in the last minute to realising the goal didn't stand was epic. I love the fact that now with the VAR reviews if you concede a goal that is then disallowed you have something else to celebrate.

Just think you could be 4-0 down and they score a 5th, which is then disallowed. The crowd will go crazy! bantz

"Except for the above offences, it is not usually an offence if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm:

directly from the player’s own head or body (including the foot)"

So sissoko in the CL final would not be a penalty as it hit his chest first then his arm?

Saw a youtube vid, not sure if it was BT or Sky, a few days ago and a ref went over the sissoko handball and said it would be a penalty this season.

"directly from the head or body (including the foot) of another player who is close"

But the wolves goal was disallowed. Am i reading this wrong?!
