So as he seems like our most definite transfer in at this stage...has anyone seen him play?

As a 22 year old centre back, he hardly seems the type to come in and take command of our shaky defence.

He's certainly a good player, but I think he's a Vertonghen backup/alternate. If we're to improve our showing in Europe and of course improve our options if/when first choice guys are injured, these are the kinds of moves to make. Realistically, the Europa is far and away our best chance at winning a CL spot, so I disagree with those saying we shouldn't necessarily improve our squad options.

I think @JJetset said previously that we were planning to bring him in for the long term and develop him? Mind you, I can't see him being very happy at not getting regular game time.

Completely agree we should improve our squad options, particularly considering we may well get rid of Chiriches, Kaboul and Fazio.

But if we have Dier, Vertonghen and Wimmer, we'll need someone a bit more experienced to go in alongside them.

Not sure who that is though.

For me a weird transfer. Could easily end up like Holtby. He has some good attributes but he certainly needs to improve and needs good defensive coaching ( :ROFLMAO: ). Not bad in the Bundesliga, but his first season where impress at this level but still a guy who is able to make funny decisions at the back...so well, fits in perfect.

I agree, I think we need a demanding and experienced RCB alongside Vertonghen. I've been thoroughly impressed with Dier this term, but I think we've got to have a commanding option in there.

Personally think Shawcross would be a good option for the mentality increase and a more intimidating defense, but I'm sure many will disagree with me.

Would you say it's done on a bit of a Whim?

He actually doesn't have much to lose. He isn't really in contention for a spot at the Euros, as I doubt Löw will change up much from the WC winning side. He will need to start making an impression after that, as I think he will be looked at for the next World Cup. That gives him a good 2 years before he needs to start making a true impression.

Watched Köln versus Schalke in the weekend. Thought Wimmer was solid but the stand out player in their defence was Hector.

I think Wimmer may already be the better defender of the two, Vertonghen the better player. Despite being in a side that languished at the lower end the of table for most of the season, Wimmer was part of a back four that conceded 5th least (36 goals) this season, while the opposite holds for Vertonghen, being a member of a defense that has conceded 5th most.

For all of his elegance in possession, Vertonghen may not be the physical, 'lock em down', defensive stalwart that we need. Let's be honest.

Don't Koln play with 2 DMs though.

I get your point, and that would explain some of that start. I honestly don't know how they set up. I just don't believe that Vertonghen is above an attempt at upgrading his position. There are better defenders out there. Adennour(sp) would have been perfect, for sure - tall, brawny, strong, quick and very aggressive.

I honestly cannot think of a more overrated defender than Abdennour. Total lack of positional sense and throws some really stupid slide tackles that again put him even more out of position.

I've watched a couple Koln games since we were linked and Wimmer looks solid. Kind of hard to discern him from the rest of the pack with how solid Koln play defensively though. Gonna be a real baptism by fire coming here for him then. One thing I did like was he seemed to have a decent eye for the long pass, but I'm not sure if we'd really use that asset with how little we play on the counter.

Now, do you mean an actual eye for a long pass, or the not much missed (by me) sixty yard 'Dawson Diagonal' ?
