At the age of seven, the 1987 FA cup final against Coventry was my first real memory of the highs and lows of supporting Spurs. This was a big day in our house as FA cup finals tended to be back then, but even more so for a family hailing from Edmonton and Enfield. Not generally seeing much further than the Tottenham bubble, it never occurred to me that Coventry weren't giants of English football. They must have been, though, to have beaten the mighty Spurs, surely! That FA cup win, that day, I now know, was the most important in their history. The players are heroes to their fans.
They were managed by John Sillett, from 1986 to 1990. He also took them to a league cup semi-final and their highest ever league position. That FA cup win is still their only honour. So it's sad to see that he has passed away. That cup final is still a day I remember fondly, despite the result.
RIP John.
