Unfortunately in Northern Ireland loyalist paramilitaries have hijacked the poppy , it adorns their murals and shrines.
They try to equate their activities to those of a legitimate military force, but the reality is they are just murderous gansters.
A lot of the criticism directed at McClean is sectarianism.

Sectarianism and blissful ignorance.

No they shouldnt in my opinion but could you imagine the shit storm if say Ozil decided he wasn't going to wear one. Far too much significance is placed on the poppy and not enough examination of the reasons so many men and woman have needlessly died.
When you say needlessly what exactly do you mean, do you believe that all the death in WW1 and WW2 was needless?

I assumed it meant most of the wars since. The political intervention and land and resource grabbing of modern wars.

This is a far from modern phenomenon, almost every war in ancient, medieval and pre-modern times were over land and resources. In fact, every war full stop is at least to a degree about land and resources. "We want your land", "But it's our land", "We're taking it anyway" is the primary reason for wars throughout all of history.

it's not how we perceive those who died in WW1 and 2 though, in those we - as 'Allies' - are the defenders rather than the aggressors. The role in Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns (and probably Ireland) is the opposite.

Apart from the "my god's awesome, your god sucks" wars. They're always... fun?

stuff like this goes under reported.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-46432703

Republic of Ireland footballer James McClean has paid for four rough sleepers to stay in a hotel in his hometown of Derry.

I get the impression that this is something that happens more often than we realise. Footballers who aren't International superstars probably do this more regularly than gets reported. Good luck to him.
