Is Mauricio Pochettino the most influential coach at this World Cup?

I really don't get this. The players will get a few weeks to rest, they don't need any more than that. I'm not sure why people think athletes need so much time off. Sure they will need to recover but it's better to stay active and keep fitness up than to rest too long. Active recovery is better than rest anyway.

You'd think it would mean that they don't need a preseason but we are not experts on conditioning and performance of elite athletes. If anyone is it would be interesting to hear their views.

It's a mental thing rather than a physical thing. We don't want to burn the players out.

Real Madrid 15

Well I'm not an elite athlete but I've trained 5 days a week year round for many years now. I just never feel like I need that much time off to rest. I think people really exagerate how much rest they feel a player needs. The players will be feeling it both physically and mentally come the end of the tournament. But 2 weeks to reset and then back to work should be enough. Even in the 2 weeks you would do some light exercise/active recovery rather than put your feet up for all that time (but you would still do on some of the days).

I actually think it's better to have a tournament than a summer off because players take too much downtime and it takes them longer to get fully fit again. Keeping active helps stay in peak condition. You just have to manage intensity levels a lot closer.
