Gazzaniga would be my first choice but I just can’t see Pochettino dropping his captain, no matter how many howlers he has.

You are giving Hugo too much credit. There is no way that Hugo's distribution is better than Gazzaniga's.

Gazza's long ball starting play has been one of the his key features which was observed and commented on in previous games before those two recent goals.

Hugo doesnt look awkward with the short ball, he is awkward with it. Blaming Jan and Toby is taking the biscuit
He isn't in term of statistics and actually if you take time to actually observe and analyze his kicking. He makes more mistakes kicking the ball out than most keepers because we make him kick it short more than most goalkeepers in the league. Allison also makes lots of mistakes with his kicking, but he is undoubtedly one of the best in the league at it. Don't get me wrong, he's no Edison or Kepa but he is a very competent short passer.

This article is a bit out of date and we actually have a more varied mode of distribution these days but it's still an important read to understand the role of the goalkeeper in a Poch team and how Lloris fulfills the role.

Similarly it's worth listening to Mark Schwarzer's views on Lloris (and why he rates him as the best in the league) on podcasts and in other places.

Thing is, Hugo is a good shotstopper but that is not actually even close to his best quality. Those are proactive rather than reactive goalkeeping, good positioning and for me his bravery.

Lloris will do the same thing time and time again, even when he makes a mistakes, if it's the right decision. Today he miss judged a corner and it cost us a goal, but when Lloris comes out for a corner he almost always gets to it. He has prevented countless of goals in this way. I mean de gea can stand on his line and make a few reaction saves, it looks very good, and when they concede and he fails to keep the shot out, it will not be seen as a mistake. Lloris tries to prevent the shot happening in the first place. If he gets it wrong it will be seen as a mistake, but it better to be in a position to make those mistakes than not make them at all.

Similarly a lot of our attacks are build from the back, and our transition from the back to the front is a major part of Poch's success, if he messes up a pass he will not hide but try again. For me, this mentality epitomises the way Poch wishes us to play.

Enough Hugo!

But why? Did you miss those two sweet sweet long balls he played near the end? I thought that was the kind of plays we were no using over here to rate our goal keepers.

He doesn't make mistake after mistake. What actually happens is every goal we concede is forensically analysed and if there's even a faint whiff of blame to be attached, he will get it. Of course, he's made mistakes but nowhere near as bad as is made out on here, but we see that with all scapegoats on SC, it builds and builds and builds until there's a frenzy of hate because the poor scapegoat is so shit. Sissoko was one, Trippier is the latest and after him it'll be someone else. Fair criticism is one thing but the way this all works on here goes beyond that.

Pah, I blame Jenas.

Im a big fan of Hugo

Its funny because he actually had a great start this season then the drink driving fiasco kind of led to/coincided with a few errors but overall i think he has performed well.

Every keeper has fucked up, look at the 75m guy at Liverscum, few fuck ups last night although didnt go unpunished.

The fact is our defence in set pieces hasnt been as good as it has been int he past and thats impacted on Hugo. Not to mention the fact our defence hasnt been that good in general play which I think has meant Hugo has had to take calculated risks.

I’ve been impressed with Gazza this season. He’s still got some decision-making improvements to work on. But he’s athletic, imposing, and comfortable with his distribution.

He’s not gonna come out sweeping, but then Hugo’s not doing that so much anymore. And if we are able to add some pace at FB in the summer it’s not so much of an issue with Sanchez there too.

Hugo’s mistake v Watford was disastrous but it wasn’t a sign of declining abilities, it was an example of what we already knew, that he is capable of lapses of judgement. However, he has been one of the best keepers in the league this season, he has saved us man points and he is still in the top ten keepers on the planet.

I don't even understand why we're having this argument. Hugo is one of our longest serving players, he's our captain, and quite frankly he's been one of the best keepers in the world over a very long period of time. Let's see how he does against the best keepers in the Premier League;

I don't think based on Gazzanigas 10 games for us that he'd challenge Hugo in any of these categories apart from maybe distribution accuracy. Have a look at David "The best keeper in the world" De Geas distribution stat by the way.
