How to handle the media?

Poch has been fantastic for us on and off the pitch a perfect representation of the class of our great club but he’s yet again come out today saying one day he would be open to manage Real Madrid, Argentina, Espanyol etc fine he may well do but unless he’s planning on leaving very soon why does he keep saying this as it’s starting to leave a bit of a sour taste to be honest!

How about just saying I’m contracted to Tottenham and excited about trying to finally win something next season in the new chapter. Stop flirting with the media about leaving or other clubs you may in the future wish to manage, it’s getting Annoying now.

But this begs the question what do you think is the best approach with these leading questions and the media in general and has it changed now compared to say when Fergie was in charge.

Ferguson and Jose were absolute masters at handling the media. Fergie was strong but did well to portray the confidence he has in the club and his players and to subtly influence the officials and to put pressure on the competition e.g. when Keegan had a breakdown and blew the title lol, same with Benetiz vs Fergie & Jose.

Jose back in the day was a master at making it all about him so there was 0 pressure on his players, he also knew how to wind others up which essentially shifted them from being 100% focused and made them doubt themselves.

The media especially now is a very powerful tool in creating positive or negative emotions in players, fans, officials etc.

So that brings me back to our beloved Poch, he usually just says prettt stock or unrelated generic answers to most questions which are fairly boring but not controversial so just keeps the status quo feeling e.g. “I don’t talk about rumours” or when analysing a game “I think we dominate and play a good game”, however when it comes to his future why does he insist on playing games with the media as I think ultimately it will start to frustrate us as fans that he’s not just saying he’s 100% committed, just like erisken has now come out and said he’s open to a new challenge, if he doesn’t now get his move to Real Madrid he’s going to look a bit stupid and fans may not back him quite 100%.

One thing Poch has done superbly through the media is to bring the gas and players closer together and also to slowly change the perception people have of Tottenham, we really aren’t spurs anymore, of course good results on the pitch are a huge part of that as are our improved training ground and stadium but it’s also been helped by how poch talks about us and our ambition and project etc.

Do you think poch handles the media well, what is his strategy? Where could he improve?

If he said nothing they'd make it up anyway.

If he gave a stock library answer they'd twist it a mis-represent it to fit their agenda.

If he gives them a truth or a slight truth, everyone knows where they stand (mostly) a lot of the rags just want a rent-a-quote they can use and switch off listening to the actual answer or have no idea how the man actually thinks (this is why I find it's better to read from a outlet you trust from a journalist you trust and watch the interview yourself.

Sometimes the space around the notes in a piece of music are more important than the notes actually being played.

Other than that it's often a simple case of "balls waxed if you do; shaved perineum if you don't!"

I really like your last line.

He's not going anywhere for the time being - at least I don't think he will until he wins something big, like Prem or CL. He has a 5 year contract and he honoured the last one.

Doesn't really make a difference to be respectful of the biggest club in the world or your old club or your national team. Nothing wrong with that.

There is no good way to handle the media as they’ll spin whatever narrative they want to spin.

Nowadays most of the ‘quotes’ are written by the question given and not the response.
I.e. Reporter - is Harry Kane off to Madrid?
MP - I don’t deal with transfers that is Daniels area...
Headline “Kane to Madrid - Spurs rocked with Poch powerless to prevent Madrid move as he distances himself from the upcoming transfer”

We as fans need to understand the media better and not react to tiny things. Take the quotes that have prompted this thread so what did he say?
The Spurs boss also spoke about Real Madrid's failed attempts to take him away from north London last summer.

"I gave my word to renew [my contract] with Tottenham," he admitted. "Of course, it is a dream to train a club like Madrid, go to the Argentine team one day or go back to Espanyol one day, but I did not consider at any time anything beyond Tottenham."
Key thing for me is the ‘of course’ which suggests the question was something like “would you one day want to manage Madrid, your national team or the team you played for”

He also says “I gave my word to renew [my contract] with Tottenham,” and “I did not consider at any time anything beyond Tottenham” but that doesn’t sell papers so is always left out of the articles.

Trust Poch and never believe what you read in the media

I think he shows
great dignity and humour
when handling the media.
He's only young
and probably wont stay
at Spurs for the next ten years
so he's showing respect
not burning his bridges
or scuttling his boats
prematurely.

Not bothered about bluster of him leaving, he has courted this for the last couple of seasons, more interested in the fact that he supposedly doesn't have final say on transfers ...

I didn't think this was the case at all, shows you the more you know ...

There is so much media nowadays, as consumers we just need to ignore it.

Poch is awesome and no fan should be telling him to shut the fuck up.

Why not? Lets call it out. I think playing the media ia one thing but constantly using the 'i may leave or i fancy the big clubs' angle has gone on too long. What is this? A continuous 'come and get me plea'?

Frankly I am getting tired of the innuendo in his interviews. The stuff before the CL final was damaging. We are heading into a final and he was talking about leaving if he wins or loses a game? It may be a language barrier but its happened too often to be the case. I think it is disrespectful to the club and the fans. He may want to manage Real in the future but why doesnt he keep it to himself. Why does the rest of the world need to know that. He is manager of THFC FFS.

He tells us we should be acting like a big club one minute and then he is belittling us and treating us like a small club the next.

Except he isn’t playing the media. He answers honestly and regularly dismisses questions about him leaving.

LOL OK thats why there is so much noise around the topic because he regularly dismisses it

There is noise because the media reports whatever stories it wants and a bunch of muppets discuss it.

For five years now I have talked to opposing fans about Kane leaving. Not reality , just media bollocks.

No the media does not always report whatever it wants in this case. It is prompted directly by his pressers and his responses to questions regarding his future.

Listen I love the guy as a manager but I think he needs to pull his head in regarding talking about his next gig.

Poch has said on numerous occasions that he wouldn’t manage Barca but stories still link him to them.

As adults we know the majority of media stories are intellectually redundant.

As adults we can go along with it and tell our manager to fuck off or we can rise above it and not waste our time on it.

I go with the latter.
