Let’s see who has enjoyed the last seven days or so and who has struggled...

Good Week

Kyle Walker

Quite a week for young Kyle. Last Sunday he picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year, this Sunday he smacks in a 25 yard free kick. My first thought was ‘wow’, second thought was ‘why hasn’t he been on free kicks before???’. Having seen the little nick off Dunn it’s not quite the world class strike we thought it was but nonetheless, even without the deflection it looked like it was going on target, which is a big step forward for our free kicks.

Sandro

The man was a beast. Coming in for Scott Parker, the Brazilian Warrior put in a master class performance, breaking up play, making tackles, distributing the ball and also crashing a shot off the bar.

His performance showed how he differs from Parker – Scotty will go haring after the ball like a greyhound chasing a rabbit, which has a positive effect on his team mates. Sandro tends to cover the defence a little better, is more physical, looks to have a better range of passing and a thunderous shot. I’m not saying he is better than Parker, but Sandro showed that Parker is not the be all and end all and Harry doesn’t need to run the Super Side Parting into the ground before giving him a rest.

Danny Rose

Alongside Sandro, Rose really stood out for me, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence they were the freshest members of the starting eleven. Rose was running hard and fast done that left channel from the very beginning and it was his surges, and Sandro’s breaking up of the play, that gave us a good tempo and got others, primarily Modric, playing well.

Again, showed that Benny doesn’t need to be run into the ground.

Caulker, Kane, Carroll...

News that Harry should be staying on next season means the young players are more likely to get game time and have a future at the club. My biggest worry with a new manager coming in was that the potential stars at the club would be overlooked as the new man seeks short term glory, and we would miss out on some quality home grown talent.

Vedran Corluka

He was right. Harry hasn’t used his squad properly, and when he is forced to two of the three best players on the pitch are brought in from the outside.

Bad Week

Harry Redknapp

With news of Hodgson being interviewed for the England job, it’s funny how Harry’s rhetoric has changed. Saturday it was ‘can’t blame Modric if he wants to leave’, Sunday night it’s ‘Bale is already at a top club’. Unless events take a drastic change, this is the best job Harry will ever have.

I wouldn’t have had any complaints if he had taken the England job if offered, no matter where we were at the end of the season, but his rent a quote style only works when he is at least giving the impression that he is doing his best for Spurs. Harry didn’t worry to say a cross word about anyone when everything he said was being scrutinised by the FA, which might make him seem a nice, caring bloke but it’s no good for a club manager. If the England job was not going to available in one year’s time (sooner as it turned out) would Harry have been so understanding with Modric wanting to move to Chelsea? Somehow I doubt it.

Gareth Bale

The Welshman’s ego has grown into a monster, and on Sunday it got a little dent as Walker received the fans adulations and the TV’s praise. The Welshman was ineffective for the most of Sunday’s game. His header that hit the bar before van der Vaart was a high point but it only went to show that the only times he should be coming off that left flank is when he is getting into the box to get on the end of crosses.

Too often he was as deep as Modric, his pretence to get on the ball and try and instigate play misguided. Bale has many qualities but not the ability to play and work the ball in tight spaces in the middle of the park, especially when his back is to goal. What he needs is space to run into, with or without the ball, and if he is going to come inside it needs to be in an advanced position so he is joining Adebayor in attack and can provide a penalty box threat – not getting narrow in midfield and congesting the space Modric and van der Vaart operate in.

Us Fans

At this rate May 19th in Munich is going to be a massive day for us. The only thing worse than missing out on the Champions League is missing out on the Champions League because Chelsea have won the bloody thing.

Disagree with your lauding of Rose. I thought his distribution was woeful, and he looked out of his depth at this level.

I think Rose had a mixed game. Some things he did really well, but others showed how Benny really does have a great left foot on him.

Capable, yes. Like-for-like replacement for Benny? Not a chance.

Agree re: Sandro. Best game he's had all season for us. Despite the vomit!

It was interesting that when we made fourth before that we owed a lot to Bentley and Pav coming in as fresh legs, perhaps Sandro and Rose can do as much this time.

Bale is a tough one. He is world class when given space to run into, but increasingly he is denied that. So he has to add other strings to his bow, a bit go guile to go with the athleticism. He has the basic tools, and I am sure in time he will become more effective cutting in, but at the moment he is not there yet. Harry has talked in the past about using him at fullback, so he has more space in front of him, which could be another way to develop him, but he would have a lot to learn defensively. At any rate I am pretty sure that shouting "go wide" at him is not the answer.

I think people have been harsh on Rose, from what I see its because he put in some poor crosses and lost the ball a few times. Lets be honest here, BAE gets put into some fantastic positions most weeks and the vast majority of his crosses are wasteful yet I never see anyone moan at him. Is it because of his personality and that he looks a bit more stylish with his play?

And he has a cool hair do. Works for me!

For BAE we could do good hair/bad hair too.
Thought Rose gave us good width and allowed Bale to move inside.
Crossing not great but remember the 'Lennon can't cross' debate
a couple of seasons ago.
BAE and Walker are quite wasteful too.
He won't get such an easy defensive ride again.

Apparently a cunningly arranged set of cones gave us more problems in training
than Blackburn did during the match

Disagree entirely about Rose, thought he was poor
Young player getting a start !
What were you expecting (R Carlos)

Everyone whose seen him play before, will know theirs more to his game than what he showed on Sunday.

Lets give him a run of games before we judge him.

I've seen him play many times for Bristol City and I can tell you that he absolutely does not have more to his game then what he showed on Sunday. His age is irrelevant here (in any respect he isn't even that young), you can tell that his technique is lacking and his delivery is sub standard.

Odd how his blinding deficiencies have been missed by our coaching staff. He is not yet the finished article and he might not cut it at Spurs, but the coaches obviously see potential there.

Rose got absolutely slated in the ratings thread, but I didn't think he was that bad. He wasn't great, but did well enough. Remember at the end of last season he was terrific at LB. I reckon he'll play against Bolton, and will probably be more tested and we'll see how it does. I'd much rather have him starting at LB than Bale.

Rose was quite nervy to me but got better as the game went on though I don't think he should be starting.. I'd prefer to put Bale at left back and that also answers the problems he has for lack of space/ being marked out of a game. We could even go Lennon left (with Bale) and Dos Santos right. I thought Dos Santos had a good week with his 10 min showing, hope he gets the nod to start if lennon is not fit.

Good post and agree with Rob that this could be a good regular feature.

Howeve, I disagree with a couple of your point.

First of all Rose didn't have a particularly good game. Defensively we weren't stretched at all meaning he could get forward a lot. He ran a lot and was enthusiastic but his distribution was poor and we lost possession a lot because of this. Being involved a lot ins't the same as having a good game.

I also think attacking Bale's ego is off the mark. There are question marks over his performances and whether the free-role suits him. But his attitude isn't in question for me. He has become a big name star due to last season's CL performances. Has he demanded a move? Has he demanded huge wages? No he hasn't.

Has he demanded a move? Or wages? Who knows.

I think he's bought into the hype surrounding him, personally. Which is a shame, because the humbleness made him more awesome.

Yes but those are assumptions. We found out last summer Modric wanted out. There was interest from big clubs for Bale, he only ever said he was staying at Spurs.

People attacking his ego are just assuming he has one now, which is completely baseless. Nothing he has said or done suggests he has developed a massive ego.
