Just saw Jordy Clasie has left on a free to return to the Eredevisie.

Blast from the past - I remember when some members on here were having a shit fit because we didn't sign him. Southampton ended up with a few of those players that never really kicked on like Clasie and Sofiane Boufal (if anyone remembers him!)

Yeah I think Southampton have finally hit a wall in terms of developing players. Not playing good football and I am surprised they haven't been relegated yet, seems like a matter of time with them.

Probably has to do with them chopping and changing scouting personnel.

They did bring in Ralph Hasenhuttl though so I think there could be a bit of a resurgence.

Well, the scouts of all major clubs seem to disagree. Maybe down to wage demands.
Last two season, he has been linked with every major club with serious bids but problem has been agreeing a price with Lyon with them demanding a lot for injury prone player
Exactly, 11 goals in 35 is hardly prolific and warrants such a high price.
TBH nowadays you don't pay the price for the player but for the contract.
11 in 35 doesn't sound good but 7 goals and 7 assists in 28 games sounds better. An assist or goal every 1 and half games makes his numbers better especially for a striker in his first season in the bundesliga

For that price they should have been in for Gomez and Haller.

Yes, the football manager "what are our scouts doing not signing them!!" players, who end up showing what are scouts were actually doing not signing them.

Who knows how he would have developed under a better manager and around better players

He’s one of the top 5 players in the world, that’s good enough imo

Maybe he was a few years ago but he's nowhere near that conversation any more IMO. That said, maybe going back to Barca will do him good though because he won't be quite as much of a big fish in a small pond and will have people like Messi who are able to pull rank on him a bit more even if the manager can't. If he gets his head back down maybe he can get back to his old level.

He's probably around 5th, apart from the obvious 2 you'd would place Hazard and Mbappe above him especially based off last season, Neymar was injured a lot and his stock went down because of his World Cup antics and off the pitch issues. Still let's not try and claim he's nowhere near the top 5 because he is, quality player, match winner - he might be a nob but he's elite.

I suppose it depends on how you assess it really. If we're talking purely in terms of his ability/talent when he's at the top of his game i.e. a best case scenario/FUT-style rating or whatever, then fine, but if you take into account things like form, attitude, impact on the team/dressing room etc. then for me he falls well short.

Obviously at the end of the day any of these kinds of lists we can come up with are completely arbitrary anyway so everyone will have a different opinion on it. Speaking purely for myself though, he wouldn't be in my top 5 nowadays. If we were picking squads "playground style" I'd be picking him far later than 5th.

Like I say thoguh, maybe going back to Barca older and wiser after seeing that the grass isn't necessarily greener might be the making of him again. We'll have to wait and see.
