The BBC are airing the first part of a new Documetary about the one and only Gazza this week

It will be on BBC2 at 9pm on Wednesday 13th. The second part a week later. Both parts will be available on the BBC iplayer frfom 9pm on Wednesday.

As important as it is to emphasise the dangers of alcoholism, I really would love one of these Gazza films to focus on just the football, and how fucking good he was.

Anything to do with Gazza is kind of sad. Of course I enjoyed watching him for Spurs in the few seasons he had with us and he could be fabulous but some of those memories are through rose tinted glasses as he could be inconsistent and the performances were variable. The caveat to that was that he was young so maybe that was understandable.
Certainly in the World Cup in 90 and for us the following season he was a special talent however that talent was largely wasted by his self inflicted injury in the 91 final. I don't think he was ever the same World Class player again which was reflected by the clubs he subsequently played for.
So for me it was a career of 'if only' where he did not fulfill his potential and which has been further clouded by his troubled private life.
