I’ll bet that Barca will buy KPB in July and then sell him for ‘silly-money’ in Januar to some club in China to cover for the de Jong transfer

We need to move quicker to sign players before they become stars like De Jong. Once they've made it big it's too late for us because we can't compete with the top clubs. Just look at Alli as an example of what we have to do. I would move fast for players like Berge before they become a big star too. Forget the big names that everyone can see is great already. While all the top clubs are chasing the Werners and Ndombeles we need to find the next big stars.

As a fan of Barca I am looking forward to see what De Jong is all about. I will say that watching Barca at the weekend that it was mentioned they have to sell Malcom to fund the signing. I'm not sure when they have to pay for De Jong (now or in the summer) but I would like to think we could put an offer in for Malcom now. He's another player who could potentially become a big star, it just seems his move to Barca came a bit too soon. He needs a club like us to build him back up again.

I guess that depends how many non EU players they have and if they have space to keep him

I guess offering them Vincent Janssen at the last minute didn't swing it

75M Euros. Thats an insane amount of money for a 21 year old, albeit a very promising talent. I think you can understand some of Poch/Levy frustrations. Being priced out of the youth market let alone established players.

£90m?

Just pack it all in. There’s no point in anyone trying to compete anymore. The financial gap is far too big.
I'm inclined to agree. What has he done in his career to be made the joint 9th most expensive player of all time?

Edit: Announced fee of €86m puts him 10th.

It’s simply how much these top talents cost now

He's not actually a "top talent" though is he? He's looked really good for a season and a half in the Dutch league.

What's happening here is that the teams with more money than God have decided to start cutting out "middle-men" like ourselves because they are now so wealthy it doesn't matter if the players they buy fail to develop into actual "top players".

In this reality, Modrić, Bale and Eriksen never play for us.

He definitely is a top talent in my opinion - regardless of whether or not prices have inflated drastically, it's how much you have to pay now.

He’ll be the worlds best CM in his late twenties if he stays injury free. I was going on about him last season when everyone wanted de Ligt. This kid can do EVERYTHING you’d want an outfield player to do other than hit a free kick.

Then we (and other clubs like us) might as well pack up and go home. There's definitely someone on here (could be @Lilbaz as he's the FFP guru, although it might have been old Bus Conductor) that's always maintained that the real purpose of FFP is to enable the traditional top clubs (plus a few oil-moneyed upstarts who got through a crack in the door as it closed) to shut up shop for good. If a player that might be the world's best CM in his late twenties is now the second most expensive player ever in that position, it's hard not to feel that the cartel has got it sealed up.

I get what you're saying, but just because the game now seems unfair doesn't mean that the likes of De Jong, De Ligt, Sessengon, NDombele shouldn't be going for this type of money - selling clubs have every right to take advantage of the crazy market.

How much do you reckon we'd want for Winks, baring in mind we have no reason to want to sell him. £40m? £50m? More?

So surprised to see this one go down in flames. Thought we had a chance considering the 100M we got burning a hole in our pockets and our obvious need. Can't believe he chose Barca over us...and they don't even have a new stadium. At least we still got Isco and Werner in the cards.

I was going on about him last season when everyone wanted de Ligt.
Actually some of us (at least me) wanted neither, especially for the extortionate, finished product prices Ajax wanted. He looks a good all around MF but his athleticism can be questioned as well as his desire to get stuck in. Spain will be good for him. As far as de Ligt is concerned his athleticism is questionable as well as other things that may work themselves out with experience.

One of these things is not like the other. Please stop with this overrated kid. Fulham has lost money on this kid by allowing those you that had never properly evaluated him to get your chance. Whether or not folks such as yourself have taken full advantage of that evaluation period is another matter. But other folks already knew from his time in the Championship that he was nothing more than a guy that got forward from LB and scored tapins. He was 'moved' to the wing because the space he left was being exploited. We've seen him in person twice, you should know better.

Not a chance. Chinese clubs are under strict currency embargoes. The days of mega money leaving China are gone for now. The 100% tax on foreign players also means only relatively small fees are possible.

It would be interesting to see if we received £11m or £5.5...

Given that Winks has achieved about the same as de Jong so far in his career and is a year more experienced, I'd say Levy would start the bidding at €86m.

The problem for most clubs (Ajax are a bit of an exception to this because of their status in Holland) is then going out and picking up the "next one" with the money. Real/Barça/Bayern/PSG/Juventus/whoever are now making eyes at these players before clubs like ours even get a look in because they now have so much money they can take the risk rather than wait for the player to develop elsewhere.

I don't hate the players (selling clubs), I hate the game. The sooner this lot all fuck off to a Super League, the better imo.

The truth will out. I recall Toby being described as the overated B side to Vertonghen.
