Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has said is benefiting from playing so little last season after a stellar month for club and country.

The 20-year-old centre-back only made eight appearances in his first season with Spurs, following his move from Estudiantes last summer, with all of those coming in cup competitions.

Couldn't ask any more of him. He's had some criticism for almost conceding a pen v Chelsea, but I'm sure he'd be getting much more if he'd allowed Hazard to get a shot off. All very easy with hindsight.

How anyone can criticise this young man after last night is beyond me. Some people just can't live without it. When Sissoko's come good, it's Foyth's turn.

Looks like a top prospect, is still young and I expect him to fill out a bit and learn to cut out some rash tackles. Only problem is that once Verts and Sanchez are both fit I don’t see him getting too much game time this season

As it is, he is already competition for Sanchez.

He has that x factor thing where you can tell he is a really good player even if making mistakes.

They are not like for like in that sense, on my view.

One is more about quality on the ball, timing and intercepting hi up the pitch and can bring the ball out well.

They other relies on speed and raw strength.

I think they both are the future and will play mostly together rather than for each other.

What an unbelievable set of centre backs we have. Lets ignore Tobys situation for a second. Jan (31), Toby (29), Sanchez (22) and Foyth (19)..perfect succession ages.

£8m is an absolute steal considering de ligt's asking price
It just goes to show, that affordable talent is availabe, but you really have to dig deep to find it. I like the way we do things. The bin dippers have spent an absolute fortune and are just 3pts ahead and also far from guaranteed CL advancement.
Just saying

Never forget that Worthington Cup Final in Cardiff against Blackburn when Ledley had an absolute stinker of a game.

The mistakes that Foyth has been making are very similar, and whilst I'm not getting ahead of myself in making comparisons it's great to see a young ball playing centre back coming through at the club who is showing obvious signs that he is potentially a very special talent.

He’s gaining a bit of experience without (hopefully) having to be relied upon for a sustained period of time. Premier league experience too not just league cup.
Perfect.
He’s prone to trying to win the ball when he can’t - Wolves pens & Chelsea (got away with it) and there was an example against Palace. But that is something very specific that Poch & the staff can and will work on with him.

I'd always rather have a player with bags of talent who makes a few mistakes than a limited player who makes (or appears to make) fewer mistakes.

The same goes for Hugo as well, by the way - I'll take his mistakes in return for his brilliance all day long.

Furthermore (a good word, no?), there are more than enough defenders who appear to make fewer mistakes than Foyth simply because they're not close enough to the fucking danger area to even try to make a tackle. So, a Foyth foul resulting from being too close to the attacker or a Luis-style "after you Claude?"

I know which I'd take.

I was there for that, what a nightmare, and the journey home was crap as well.

Foyth is going to be a cracking player as he picks up more experience.

There's talent like this everywhere but they just need the opportunities to play matches consistently, we could in reality find gems like these but there's little chance of them progressing as they need to play matches and since we play in the most competitive league in the world there are incredibly fine margins, the players that come in have to be mentally ready as well as possessing the ability to deliver.
